Problem with bear traps is that depending on the zombie's strength/decay/determination, it could rip its own foot off and keep going with a stump.

Helmets would be pretty useless; even if it stopped the zombie from getting to your head, if it bit you anywhere else you'd still die and become zombified.  It might give you protection against a surprise bite, but not much after that.

I really can't describe World War Z in too great of detail without ruining it.  This topic is covered.  Read it, it's actually pretty interesting.

But, to ruin it a little bit...  Zombies do have the strength, weak flesh and determination to rip their own limbs off to get at food.  Plus it's the disabled ones you have to be most careful of.  Where the regular zombies come at you standing, the ones that are missing legs will be hard to see.

I've read both ZSG and WWZ.  WWZ is by far the better of the two. :)

I have an E-Tool! it would be perfect for bashing in zombie heads.

I still think a 12 gauge with #4 or 00 buck would be good even with the heavy recoil  when things got close.   A lever gun in 44 special or light loaded 44 mag would be good.. you could make slugs from wheel weights over a campfire.

given the choice i would go with my win 94 trapper .44mag any day over a shotgun. the truncated beast is faster handling with a lower recoil, hence quicker and more accurate follow up shots than any 12 gauge shotgun i have ever used even when it's loaded heavy with win296 or h110 behind a 240gr xtp. it'll more than do the job, even on a zombie i expect, plus it'll out-range the shotty by a country mile. i would stick with jacketed ammo though, driven to the max. never had any luck with cast loads.. jams, bore leading problems and piss poor accuracy about sums up my experience with them.

btw congrats on your henry purchase, a very nice rifle. wish i had one

One weapon I haven't seen mentioned yet is a simple water hose, like firemen's.  It would have more than a few tactical uses.
I suppose if you had the right equipment, replacing water with acid would be quite a sight :D

The aa12 would be cool.. I also like the old "striker" revolver shotgun that this thing looks like.

I have had no problem with cast loads in my brothers marlin lever 44 or my henry so far.    A 44 special would be plenty and a lot less recoil.. hold a couple extra rounds too..  Use round nose flat point lead slugs in lever guns even tho.. the Henry feeds anything so long as it is not too long.  240 cast semi wadcutters feed fine.

Use Hard cast slugs.   Don't go over about 1600 fps and you shouldn't get leading.    The cast slugs seem to be slightly more accurate too.. the early marlins and winchesters had shallow rifling and weren't good with lead slugs.   the newer guns seem more lead slug friendly.

It would be good to have a handgun and a rifle chambered for the same round and that round would need to be easy to reload in the field.  In retrospect the .367 would be a bit better..  lighter and shoots as flat with much less recoil.   I just like the 44..

223 is great.. no real recoil and light ammo.. accurate and powerful but... when a semi auto jams it is a club.. any sub par ammo will make it jam..

Just drive to Dallas, TX.

Surround yourself with Texans.

Eventually the Zombies would starve themselves out because.....

I don't know how to splint a fractured arm, so I'd either have to go around with a floppy arm, or read how to splint it.

I don't know how to butcher a cow/pig/etc so I would either have to become a vegetarian or read how to butcher. I don't think its as easy as walking up to a cow and cutting a slab of meat off its side ... is it?

I don't know how to weld chain link fence and supports to the windows of my vehicles so I would have to hope the glass holds, or read how to weld.

The zombie survival guide wasnt included because it doesnt contain (to my knowledge) specific information pertinent to surviving. Shoot/bash em in the head = good zombie. Great, now what?

There have been several good threads on prefered zombie guns, I think we covered that topic well enough. We even had a more general thread on what you would do post zombie outbreak, where you would go, what supplies you would take, etc, but what wasn't mentioned, or discussed in depth, was they kind of information you would take with you.

I was kind of hoping to tap a little bit of the variety of people here to find specific rescources, or flesh out gaps in my thinking.

So ... to get this back on track ...

What books/manuals would you consider essential, specific titles or general categories, for your end-of-civilization or post zombie attack library. While the topic specifies a zombie attack, include your choices for general end-of-civilization-as-we-know-it survival fare. Don't forget field manuals, I know FMs relating to survival exist, just not the specific names.
