Hehe,  TwentyFo has got you guys all riled up again.

On a serious note, the last rap group I thought had something worth listening too was Public Enemy.  I lump current rappers with boy bands and the Nickleback-esque bands all in the same category:  SOS.  Same Old 'Stuff'

lmao @CAV and zuii. you guys would have been there in the mid-70s sayin punk isnt music. and in the 50s sayin rock'n'roll isnt music. and in the 30s sayin jazz isnt music. and the C19th sayin ragtime isnt music. and in the C16th sayin baroque isnt music...

As for Kanye West I can't agree more, he just seems like a self righteous sweetheart bag.
agreed.

I thought it was less about rap being a legitimate form of music (which it is) and more about what total sweetheart bag some of the rappers are (which some are)

nope, you are wrong. All the examples you list have harmony and melody. take out harmony and melody and you have rap. Rap aint music, its art, but not music.

Rush Limbaugh said it much more succinctly:

I do enjoy quite some rap songs.  :uhoh The beat mostly, or the combination of the beat/instruments with voice. Sadly it seems they can't sing about anything else than sex/money/drug/gangster. Other music styles usually have a wide range of subjects from war, politics, being a man, life.

Take out melody and harmony and you get rap. its art of some kind, it just aint music.
rap does not = music

Who do you think had the most nominations this year for the Grammy Awards. Drum roll please...........Lil Wayne (A Rapper) led the way with 8 nominations. Grammy awards are voted on by industry experts. They obviously think rap is music. Just because you don't like it or what you perceive as its message doesn't make it a less valid form of art or music.

All you people that think that it's as easy as tying a shoe are completely wrong. Grab your game mics and record your freestyle; then post it on here for all to hear. I can almost guarantee that you will sound ridiculous.

As far as Kanye West goes he is an arrogant a-hole. However, I still like and respect his music. I've purchased most of his albums (Graduation, Late Registration, and 808's and Heartbreak). He is lyrically superior than most artists i.e. Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, and TI. He is a clever poet who always has the sickest beats that really make jamming out to it unheard of.

Rap has different variants as well. You will tell the difference between them by the links posted.

Wrong. You just don't hear them on the radio. Now who's fault is that?

it's a good point, but as other have stated i was saying musical content

I would like to see jay z or lil wayne tell me about the pentatonic scale or the hexatonic scale....oh wait they can't because they have no knowledge of music or the structure of music

can they tell me about chord progessions....no because they don't know any of that either, the worst thing they do know is take a perfectly good rock and roll song and put their crappy words in it and call it their own.

as for the grammys, they don't mean much to me, the only thing anyone hears about is the best pop and rap albums, which is a shame, but it's like i said, people these days are just kind of dumb and prefer catchy music with no substance over good music that will stand the test of time. (no offense twentyfo if you like rap)

We do live in a free country so everyone should listen to what they like, its just my opinion that rap stinks and is the lowest form of muisc, if it can be called music.

It's like i said before, it will not last and think about this (again) what are you going to sing and teach your kids when they're young?

If we are going to let the Grammys start setting definitions then we might as well throw dictionary's
OUT all together. Rap is not music and grammys have NOTHING to do with it. I do think rap is art. Rap is not music.

Harmony and melody are ABSENT in RAP, Its not my Opinion, its fact. Unless we just start burning dictionary's because we dont like the definitions, then we can say fish are people.

Just as absurd.
