Now THESE were games (Images galore)
« on: January 28, 2009, 06:22:18 PM »
Ok guys, we're all gamers here. I'd like to see some shots of some REAL games. I guarantee that this thread is going to say something about the ages of the posters. ;) But don't just post pics. I want to hear about them, too, and why you think it belongs on the list of "Great Games of All Time."

This may be one of the BEST adventure game series of all time, and certainly my all-time favorite series period:

Quest for Glory I, with the VGA remake. I miss Sierra's adventures. LucasArts made some good ones, but there is STILL nothing that can compare to the Sierra adventure games of the late 80s and mid-90s. IMO, Quest for Glory was the best of them all, just because of replayability with the multiple character classes and RPG elements. THIS was how to build an RPG. None of that level-up stat boosting. You wanted to get stronger, you actually had to WORK at it.

Quest for Glory II: Trial by Fire IMO was the most polished and best all-around game in the series. It was a little more hectic because of the time limit (15 days of in-game time, IIRC) but it had a GREAT story and expanded well on the whole series. The ability to import your character from the previous game was revolutionary, and this had the BEST end-game sequence in the series. Oh, and there's the X-ray Specs easter egg.... This was recently remade into 256-color VGA graphics by AGD Interactive, when Sierra declined doing so themselves.

Quest for Glory III: Wages of War wasn't part of the original plan, but was inserted because the original story was rushing too much (watch the end credits to the EGA version of Trial by Fire to see what I mean). It was also the first to be released in 256-color VGA with Sierra's point-and-click design. IMO it was the weakest of the series, but still had a good story and the added bonus of being able to play as the Paladin (my favorite character class, ESPECIALLY as I find the QfG Paladin the truest definition of what a Paladin SHOULD be. Frell you, AD&D). This is where the series begins getting a little darker.

I'm of mixed feelings about Quest for Glory IV. It was buggy out of the box (this was right when Sierra's quality began going downhill) and I hated the combat system. But of all the games in the series, I think IV had the best story. This is the darkest and most tragic game of the series, and one of the first games I played where the main character suffers a REAL and truly personal loss. Katrina may be the most interesting and complex character in the series.

I deliberately leave Quest for Glory V off this list. It was buggy, (patch #2 was released ONLY to fix a problem patch #1 added) rushed, features that were promised were cut, and much of it departed WAY too far from the mechanics of the first four games and in ways that were NOT for the better. Additionally, despite its release date it was horribly dated visually. QfG5 was a direct victim of the changes being made at Sierra after being bought out by Vivendi, and IMO it shows. It DID have a good story, and GREAT music and voice-acting, but is otherwise forgettable.

Oh come on. There was nothing NOT to like about X-wing. TIE fighter was a worthy successor, XvT had so-so multiplayer, and XWA was just poorly executed. This was the best of the series.

Best. Air. Combat. Sim. EVER.

Especially playing with Bearcats, F2Gs, P-80s, Shindens and Kikka jets in WWII: 1946. :D

I could name a couple others: Half-Life 1 and 2, and Jedi Knight among others, but I want to leave some room for the rest of you all. Besides, these are my top picks.

Nothing says classic like Leisure Suit Larry. All real men have played one of Al Lowe's games at some point in their life

Chalenge,

You'll probably need to adjust the compatibility mode settings, or maybe using a DOS box or Microsoft VirtualPC to create a Win98 machine would work, too.

I still need to find a torrent of XvT. I've been playing the Demo version for 6 years.

X-wing vs. TIE Fighter is only good for multiplayer. The single-player game is rudimentary at best (think the old Aces High 8-player, only flown entirely offline against drones). Balance of Power added a modestly enjoyable campaign, but it still was of no comparison to what you had in the original X-wing and TIE Fighter.

Granted, once the modding community figured out how to add completely new ships flying the E-wing was a blast. The one I did for X-wing: Alliance is still out there, too. She's like the 4-Hog of the Star Wars Universe.

Screw you, Essential Guide! THIS is what the E-wing is supposed to look like!

:D

I WILL give that to X-wing: Alliance. Despite the technology limitations, and the fact LucasArts was INCREDIBLY paranoid about fan-based modding communities, you could make some pretty nice-looking ships (check out xwaupgrade.com, they're still in business, tho I rarely pop in anymore).

PTO for SNES

PTO 2 for SNES and PC (still play the PC version every so often - needs to run in 256 colors!)

I loved these games so much, even though there weren't very popular (in the US).  I got my handle 'Fulmar' from these games.
In game callsign: not currently flying
Flying off and on since Warbirds
Aces High Movies available at www.derstuhl.net/ahmd2 - no longer aceshighmovies.com - not updated either

PTO IV for PS2 was GREAT!!! I used to rent it and play it all the time. Ive been looking for something similar ever since, but the closest I can get, Pacific Storm: Allies, barely runs on my computer.

Don't forget fighter duel, one of the best sims out there. Everything during that time (486 33) looked a heck of a lot worse. Check out the gauges, still look nice after all this time.

If the PTO is the one where you fought a strategic level game with the Japanese or Americans then yes I loved the PTO series and the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series as well.

My all time favorites though are as follows in no particular order:

Delta Force (first and second one)
Rainbow Six
X-Com 1 & 2
Chopper Command
Zaxxon (arcade I know but still one of the greats)
EAW
AoP (Aces of the Pacific)

I have more I just don't have time to look up photos from work.
