A little help would be nice :)
« on: April 04, 2009, 11:36:19 PM »
Here's the situation.  I have an older computer, been playing fine (except for the occasional drop in FR).  Today, it just went bad.  I usually fly in Medium Vis Mode and get FR of 60....today, it dropped to 15, and FR of 5 when i got around trees.  To make matters worse, the whole thing locked up on me when I alt tabbed out and open internet to look for tips.  Finally, during an RTB, the computer just crashed into a blank blue screen (this has also happened before).

Here is DXDIAG

Sounds like something has been added to your background processes.  It would not take much to get your computer starved of resources with it only having 512MB of RAM.

Once file swapping starts, it will kill the performance of the game.  Check the background processes and available free memory in the task manager for a start.

You could try downloading Alacrity. When you run it the program will suggest what to leave running, what can be shut down. Once you set it up just run before you want to play AH and it will automatically shut down everything in your list. It will even start AH after it completes its run.

Blackviper.com will also give you some guidance on what services do what.

I do not know what you have the "Maximum Texture Size" set to, but you could lower it and see if it helps with the resource issues.  Might want to kill all the skins as well.

Remove them from the 'skins' folder in the game and remove all the files in the 'cache' folder.

Set the 'Maximum Texture Size' to 256 and see what it does as well.

I am just troubleshooting.  The description you give sounds like resource related problems, which could easily be the case.  In order to verify that, reducing the resources used by everything in the computer should result in some gains in game performance, once you get passed the computer having to swap.
