I am more annoyed with the Mother for being upset that her daughter has to suffer consequences in this instance than I am about the girl skipping school.  If you skip, prepare yourself for consequences... and if you're a big enough girl to spend the weekend in jail as a result, go for it!

Perhaps mom, should be her cellie?  A little mother/daughter get-together?

I am all for the parents getting punished for the deeds of their underage children.  I bet it would make the parents pay more attention to developing the behavior of their children.

The article indicates that the daughter is in jail instead of juvenile detention because she is not underage.

Actually, Why does she have to go to school if she's an adult?

You're upset with the mother?
All she did was skip school. That isn't a jail offense.

She has 18 illegal absences. You get a hefty fine for 5 (at least in my state).
Obviously if she skipped school 18 times she isn't a 'good kid'.

Sounds like the girl and the mom need some good schooling.

Why is it that most of the stupid "a judge decided this..." stories come out of Texas? Please tell me how an 18 year old can go to jail over school absences, or even how a judge can order someone over 18 not to miss a class. This is such a blatant waste of tax dollars and a clear abuse of power. If anyone should go to jail, it should be the Judge.

I find it ironic that people criticize the new generation as stupid and then lash out against attempts to keep kids in school.

I think there's something not clicking here... the only way I could imagine this as a true injustice would be if this is her first or second offense. I.E. 'good girl' goes out with some friends not knowing what she's getting into, and then she vows never to do it again and goes back to getting A's and whatever, and then big bad mister judge comes along and puts here in jail.

She has 18 illegal absences. She must have THOUSANDS of dollars worth of fines even to this point. She obviously did NOT want to go to school, and she needed significant punishment to be put there.

I think it's totally appropriate.

Sure I'm upset with the Mom.  If the girl skips school, she suffers the consequences.  This whole crappy attitude of "oh, I'm crying for my poor daughter for having to suffer in jail" is pathetic.

If you wanna skip, fine. Just suck it up when the consequences catch up with you.
