According to two book sources, all 130 M's were sent to ONLY the 56th Squadron.   Of those, 12 were lost in crashes, of those 11 pilots perished.   So 118 M's saw combat.  Unless for those with a technicality count the 2nd YP-47M, which was really a converted D-25(7), then it'd be 117.   But the M was deliberately produced to outfit One Squadron and one Squadron only.

108 Ms were produced, 106 went to the 56th.

10 pilots were actually killed in training accidents, but not all were caused by faults with the M.

I've checked a third book and it says 130 M's were produced in total.

I have the "Encyclopedia of WW2 Aircraft"  it also says 130 made with 3 preceding YP-47Ms. It also says they went to the 56th FG only.

Well, if there was oil on the cowling before the snow fell, it could have mixed in with it.  It is a somewhat uniform layer--just what I first thought of.

Possible, another thing I just noticed was the main cowl isnt white.  Its interesting to me this one also has invasion stripes.  When was the M first deployed?
