  Are you talking about the pontoonboats that you can row or power with flippers?

 If so yes,they're great for small lakes,ponds and slow streches of river water. I've used float tubes that are similar and they had velcro fasteners all over the place to lock in rods,tackle and even a drink holder.

  It's fun when you hook a fish big enough to pull you around,they dont have to be that big to do it either.I know of a few small out of the way lakes that can only be fished using one of these craft,it's impossible to fish from shore and you cant get even a small boat into them.

If you want to fish from a kayak, look up "muskie cradle" on the internet.

Frabil makes a nice model for ~$30.

Get a set of jaw spreaders and some good hemostats too.

Heavy tackle and a life vest. It's easy.

Musky will hit on a stinky shoe if you drag it right. (I prefer kittens hooked through the neck.)

Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT, I repeat... DO NOT need a metal leader when you fish for any sort of toothed fish. The secret is not a secret. You must set the hook immediately and NEVER let the fish get any slack whatsoever. If you give him a bit of line, he'll take your tackle.

The musky in the OP was caught with 8lb test, no steel leader, on a small bass pole.

Not a pontoon, just a regular kayak, well regular to me I don't know much about them.  Actually kayak fishing is becoming a pretty big thing.  Let's ya get into tight places, some exercise, etc..  Many sites on it now.  There are even guys around here that go out onto Lake Ontario (just a little ways from a river mouth) and use their kayak to troll for salmon and been successful.

Glad this thread was revived, although it made me spend 2 hours the other night in my office, re lining my poles, changing trebles on lures etc........  Boat is in the garage winterized......im dying here!!

Come on Spring!!!!!  Winter fishing around here is REALLY slow, not a whole lot going on.

I have a LLBean outlet store really close to me Bug (10mins away), and they have a great selection of kayaks, Id be glad to run down and get you any info on them if you would like, let me know

Come on Spring!!!!!  Winter fishing around here is REALLY slow, not a whole lot going on.

TY and I know the feeling about the boat...although I could take mine out most anytime...my hands stuck in a grip of the wheel would make it hard to fish!!!

Thats why I just Bank fish mainly this time of year and do that pretty close to home. This lil lake I hang around has some really good bass in it. Tough to catch at times but every now and then you hang that one that makes your week.

Spring time is a comin...and the spawn will be on and the big ole bass will be hungryyyyyy

 Ahh,now I see what you mean,well I still stand by my statement,be sure to keep everything you want to bring back to shore on some sort of leash.... While they may be more stable than a white water kayak,I doubt they're any more stable than a canoe and there's a fine line between staying upright and flipping....

  It seems we both fish the same waters,although I fish across the lake from you,I hooked my 1 and only Atlantic salmon in a river off of lake Ont. I guess I should have said I used to fish,unfortunately I cant fish like I used to so I've all but given it up.

  If I'm lucky I make it out 2 or 3 times a year these days and last year I only went once,early in the spring for lake Huron steelies. Sadly the days of 150 to 200 fishing days are long past me.

  Bug,I'd like to try some flyfishing in 1 of those kayaks,I'm sure it would be more usefull than a float tube or small pontoon craft.


     

 PS: I could see it being used by duck hunters too.

Nice boat!

I got one too, has to do the chameleon act from family pleasure to fishing.  Does all right for the salmon trolling but not so great in the rivers and I also don't like trailering it so I kinda get stuck to the whims of Lake Ontario's waves and weather.  Figured a kayak would be a good fill in the bad days toy.  Plus I can use the exercise part to sell it to the wife.

Oh I'm sure fishing from a kayak has its risk.  I will definitely heed your warnings.  Hell I had enough trouble just stepping into my boat last season. ( nasty ankle sprain, could even get out of boat).

Have to thank you Canadians for the Atlantic stocking, you're doing a hell of a job.  There has been a huge resurgence of Atlantic the last two years.  In fact the first fish I caught last year was an Atlantic.



Hopefully they continue to grow in numbers.

I'm glad it was revived too!  I was doing pretty good fighting the addiction and suffering through winter.  Then last week went to Gander Mountain with the wife, started getting pumped about getting back out on the water now I'm dying for spring to get here. 

Thanks for the offer Mbailey, but I actually have a canoe/kayak place on Oak Orchard River that has a huge selection.  I plan on going down there within the next few weeks to start figuring what would be a good fit for me and something I can afford.

After watching the news this morning  i wonder if we'll have something to catch by summer;  was a report of  birds dying in Sweden also and dead fish washed ashore from Arkansas, Florida, Chesapeake Bay,New Zeland,Haiti,Brazil,Sarnia Ontario.

Carp are sucky table fish. Crappie, bass, catfish and walleye are better than anything you'll find in most restaurants.
