I still have a box of IBM or clones like HT is talking about.

They just have more "feel" to the fingers, seem crisper, to type on.

A bit of noise while typing is no big deal for mean. This one is a KeyTronic, and its been going strong for years now. Other than some parakeet seeds under the space bar that get in the way now and then its in good shape!

Yes I wish I could find one of those keyboards. They make a lot of racket while typing but it's soo smooth.

Personally, I think they, having had to put up with the horror of what you put them through when you type posts for the Aces High BBS, have quite simply had enough, and are now taking any and every opportunity they can find to run away.

Ripley I got most of mine during our city's "clean up week" when residents can put virtually anything on the curb and the city will haul it away.

Of course that makes a great time for frugal people to cruise around and pick up stuff that they can reuse. Monitors, keyboards, old desktop units, you name it and if you look you can find it. I found one box that had at least 10 old IBM type keyboards, some had the old big plug, some the newer smaller plug. With an adapter or 2 I've always been able to reuse most of them.

Over the years I have used those parts to rebuild working computers. I know I've given away at least 10 systems to people in need who couldn't afford one. Not fancy, not new, not high powered. But capable of running basic software and surfing the net, etc. Plus I got to play with all the hardware and try to get old systems back up and running again.

Oh I forgot the other thing I love about my IBM key board/boards (been using them for over 25 years), the keys have caps on them so it is very easy just to remove the cap and completely clean the keys.

oooooooooooor .... move the key caps around on the keyboard for those who are "hunt & peck" typers ... I pulled that one quite a few times on some co-workers. Was a riot watching them compare their keyboard to one that was ok to actually know where to put the keys back in their proper places.

One other great thing about those keyboards was the tactile feedback you got when pressing down on the key.

I have a Mitsumi KFK-EB9HY that is my favorite keyboard.  I know what you're thinking, "lol cheap Asian-brand crap keyboard."  The thing is, for my old job that I worked for 9 years, I ordered many different <$20 keyboards for our office PCs, and this one was (imo) the best of them all.  Good key press and the key layout that I like, not too loud (I don't like the classic IBM keyboards, too noisy and the keystroke is too long, had to use them at my high school).  Best of all, they don't break.  When I left my job, all of them that I ordered over the years were still working.  Granted, that wasn't 25 years of not breaking, just at most 9 years for the oldest ones, but that's still a good indication of quality.

A few years ago they stopped making them (I'm not sure who was the real manufacturer, there were a few clones of the same basic keyboard by different brands with slightly different features out there).  I went back to ordering many of the different keyboards out there from Newegg for new PCs at my old job, and I never could find one as good as that Mitsumi.  My fear is that I'll one day break the one I'm typing on now that I bought for myself and I'll not be able to replace it.

And oh yeah, the key labels are painted on, but so far only the "D" key has worn off.  For MMORPGs and FPSs I use "SDFC" instead of the default keys, with D being the "run forward" key, and apparently that's the only one that I press enough to wear off the label.

I thought most keyboards were made so that the letters are actually the parts that' AREN'T painted, with the surface color being added later.  This way it is impossible to wear letters off, unless you take the whole key with it.

some are, some aren't.  One my three workstations at work (all Dells) each has a different Dell keyboard, two of them being compact ones with the letters are like you describe and the other Dell keyboard with the letters painted on.  The one with the painted letters have the keys "W,A,S,D,Z,C, Enter, F, J, R" letters worn off.  You can tell which of the three is my work game station.

Get a good air can, pop off the keys and give your keyboard a good cleaning.  You can also get an isopropyl alcohol type cleaner to clean the keys and membrane (if keyboard is a soft touch).

I have three IBM 101 keyboards like HiTech, all in good condition but unfortunately all AT connectors.  When I got a new system a few years ago, I couldn't use the keyboard anymore as my motherboard didn't have a PS/2 slot that I could connect my IBM keyboard to with an AT passover.  Bought a Logitech G15 keyboard to replace it and love it.
