Heck, it would almost be better if there were icons at 5k out that disappeared as you got closer into the 2k range.  Is that a silly request?
Not really, been discussed before, but it can't be done, works the other way.

I know it can't be done but that point aside, why would it not be better?  It would make my ava experience more enjoyable, isn't that worth something?

Didn't they have that kind of setup a couple FSOs ago?  I could swear they had a setup where the icons cut out at ~200 or maybe it was 400.

I know it was jarring when the icon disappeared that close up, but 2000 or so away it might be less annoying.

something i found kind of amazing, the very first time i flew in there.

i'd see the dot. i don't have a clue how far out. i could possibly go back and watch the film though, to see.

anyway, i'd see the dot. look on radar, see there were no friendly cons in that area, so i turn in that general direction. at this point, it's still just a dot. can't tell what he's doing. or can i? i don't know if it's me or not, but i'd swear that i can see it getting slightly bigger. then i notice it move to one side or the other, or possibly lose a little alt, as it gets larger.
then you can see wings, and it's on. in that first fight, i had no clue what i was fighting. all i saw was wings go by in a blur. that fight was on for possibly 2 minutes....maybe less. i got a lucky shot, and survived that one.

i think it takes getting used to. i have noticed that all the german planes disappear to me if they're below me....as i can't make them out from the ground clutter. but then again....ain't that what camouflage is supposed to do? if i was on their tail, and managed to keep my eyes on em, i wouldn't lose em.......glance over my shoulder, look back, they've turned.......re-acquiring em can be hard. again...camouflage..........i think. it could also be that i suck.  :rofl :rofl

something else that amazes me, is that i sometimes get so focused on my fight, that i only see the con i'm in on. maybe another if he goes through our fight.
then i watch the film.....often i'll see 3 or 4 others in the vicinity that could've come over and picked me....or that could've picked my opponent.

this truly is a different ball game.....doesn't mean anyone in there is any better or worse than others......it's just a different skill set to survive in there. and friggin FUN too.

Icons should be all or nothing.  Having something in between defeats one of the main elements that having no icons brings which is the element of surprise.  The fact is, in actual combat, there was a very real danger of being bounced by an unseen enemy.  The way AH is right now, that element is greatly reduced because of the icons (not non-existent – but it is reduced).  Going into the AVA provides a bit of a change of scenery with an entirely new element factoring into the mix.  On the offensive side, you can prowl around and pop unsuspecting enemies.  On the defensive side, you have to maintain an even greater level of SA.  No icons makes things interesting and fresh and partial icons would defeat that effect.

Having said all of that, I do think that the MA’s should always have icons.

Quick question, I might of overlooked this, when we switch sides after a capture, are we switching plane sets too?

i'm not sure, but i think that is the idea.....i think it's meant to be sure no one can claim either side had a distinct advantage due to plane set.

Ah,....the issue of "no icons" arises again.   :joystick:  Over the past few weeks there has been a flurry of spirited discussion about the current no icon setup in the AVA. For most who are willing to spend some time and give it a try, no icons is great fun and they keep coming back for more.  For those who can't or won't adapt to no icons, there are 10 or 11 other arenas where icons are in full bloom. For those who are still undecided, stick around, and no icons may start to grow on you.   :salute

I think the lack of low-con visibility is really answered by inbound alt now that I think about it.  If you come in around 6K, that would be a heck of a climb to get at you for a sneaky, Rammey-the-tard kind of kill.  On the other hand, it really lessons your ability to see much below you...which would allow Rammey-the-tard to make it home or just wait on some other arena noob to come trolling by.

If you set the DAR to track cons at 100ft AGL + I think you're good....you can at least see inbound cons on the clipboard.  Last night the DAR didn't work at all and when I took off from my base, I was leaving desert area about 2 clicks away from the base....couldn't figure that one out.  It looked like the map wasn't in sync with the DAR.

Maybe, maybe not, but I think we would all agree it would be good to have the tools to be able to try it and find out.

No icons is all about reality of the historical time period.  Setting the dar down low makes it like a modern day radar.  Obviously, unrealistic in WWII. Yeah, no icons makes it much tougher and requires each of us to be on constant lockout.  That's why in real air combat, there are always formations of 2 or multiples of 2.....mutual support.  If someone is cruising along, not checking their own six, and expecting someone out there somewhere to check it for them, there's disappointment coming soon.....and in multiples of two.  Well, at least if Jappa and I around.  :D.   :salute
