You can find one on gunbroker.com for around $100. That's where I got my 1943 91/30 for $85.

Went to the farm today to do some shooting in the snow. We pulled out the rifles and gave a good cleaning. From left to right My dads, .303 Enfield, Mosin Nagant with the Hex, Egyptian Maadi Ak-47, and lastly my Yugo SKS.

We didnt take the 303 at the last minute but took the rest. Mosin and AK fired really good (infact, I really want  mosin now) and my new SKS, well, seems I am going to need to field strip it and get the cosmoline out of the bolt and bolt carrier. She fired good, but didnt eject the shell. So, tomorrow will take it all apart and give it a thorough thorough cleaning in and out. Wish I had known that before we went out. Oh well, lesson learned I guess.

Larry, how's that hi-Point? I was looking into them a while back, and still am... I hear it is a real "usable" gun, shooting easy, and you can put a boatload of rounds through it.

Got a couple of questions about Mosin Nagants, I might honestly try to buy one, this thread is filling me with desire...

I've noticed some (M44's mainly) with laminated stocks, honestly love the look, but is this a factory thing or are these refurbished/later?

Also, this goes for a lot of service rifles I've seen, people don't seem to like to use the attached cleaning rods, why is this?

I've got a whole thread on the Nagant since I'm buying one soon, and a great resource is 7.62x54r.net its a website devoted just to the Mosin Nagant.

IIRC, the Nagants are laminated by the factory to strengthen and preserve the rifle. As far as not using the attached cleaning rods, I would think it would be just to preserve the overall equipment, and keep all parts in the best condition possible.

I'm not talking about the cosmoline, laminated wood construction is something you can see a lot of in later Soviet designs... it's like plywood, kind of, they take bunch of 1/8" or so thick slices of wood and stick them together at opposing grains and then cut the stock out of that, as opposed to a solid brick of wood. I find a picture.

Obnoxious example with alternating layers dyed, just for the sake of making it easy to see.

The laminated looks the best, but they were put on usually post-war during a rebuild or as a replacement. I have not bought a new mosin in a while, but if I was, I'd get a laminated on looks alone.

The first gun I ever bought was a Vietnam bringback chinese M44. I wish I still had it.

And I always use the cleaning rods if I have the cleaning kit. ;)

Most military cleaning rods are steel. These wear in the bore while cleaning. It's better to use aluminum rod or a nylon string pull through for cleaning to prevent wear.
