Baseball is a fun sport.. Football is a fun sport.. Nascar is a fun sport.. They are all fun sports.. That is the reality of it.. The World Cup is just the one coming up now and pits many of the worlds best players against eachother.. but you can't say say its the only worthwhile sport.. The world would be pretty bleak and boring if there were only one sport..

Baseball WAS a fun sport, I loved it.  Now it bores me.  ME.  Just me.

Coaching tee ball and Little League probably didn't help.  But then, I know squat about the game apparently.

Your point is well taken, but frankly this board is so predicatable whenever the World Cup comes up....lots of posts about how football (soccer) is boring etc.  WHen baseball is declared boring though, for example, people take it so personally.  I find it funny, as if their patriotism is being questioned or something.

Tell ya what, let's have a try at staying on topic for a change.

How do you think the USA soccer team will fair this summer?  Discuss.

Personally, I hope they do well.  Anything not in the script makes the game more interesting (cos lets face it, soccer needs all the help it can get).

The whole point of soccer is it's simplicity, you don't need lots of equipment, you don't need a lot of space, you don't need hours of training, don't need to be 6'9" and weigh 300 pounds and you don't have to wear lots of armour to protect you from other players and fast moving balls. You don't need ice, nets or sticks. You don't need a whole day to play it and you don't need to be super fit.

All you need is two people, a ball, it doesn't even have to be a real ball, a tolerably clear piece of ground, it can be sandy or stony or concrete. That's the beauty of soccer, anybody can play it anywhere. It's easy to play but difficult to play well. That's why it's huge around the world even now in America.

I'm not even a particular fan of soccer but I can see it's virtues. When it's played well it's an art form. My nephew has just turned eighteen and has played for Ireland at junior level and has some big English clubs sniffing around. The skills he demonstrates are amazing. My own seven year son has just started playing soccer. I encouraged it just to get him playing sport and working in a team. He loves it and it turns out he's not bad at it. He's also quite an aggressive player which surprised me.

Soccer is the people's game even though at the higher end it's all about silly money. Which hopefully my nephew will see some of! :aok

OK let me begin by saying I think the U.S. will fail because of all the reasons stated before.. dollars.. fame/women/stardom.. and a foreign coach.. They don't have the talent, they don't have a good home-grown system.. its just not there..  I think they will finish behind Ghana and Germany.. it's a toss up with Portugal..  But I don't think they'll get out of the group stage..  The last time they met Ghana they got beat 2-1 in 2010 WC knockout stage..  Will see if things have improved or gone belly up again..

lol

I understand it I just find it boring now.

I'm sorry that this bothers you so much.

It bothers me zero.  I enjoy the game and I enjoy explaining it.   I always find it curious that everyone seeks first to be understood before they seek to understand, me included.

fame/women/stardom..

Fame/women/stardom will be the reason the US doesn't advance?  What the hell?  Those are among the three stupidest reasons I could have thought of.  Or are you talking about some other nation?

I'm betting poorly because, as has been pointed out, most Americans don't really care about soccer. Golf may very well be bigger here.

Sorry, but it's almost like asking how the UK is going to do in the world series. Only its just barely an applicable questions instead of non applicable.

I have actually been suprised at how well the US plays the game given the lack of attention it receives.

I do think they will come last in their Group though.

That's not completely true or fair. Soccer is gaining in popularity in the US very rapidly. One of the big problems for American soccer right now is that Americans ARE so bad for it, and even as soccer is getting more popular viewership of MLS games has actually decreased. Americans are just watching more European soccer. (Soccer has actually surpassed ice hockey as of 2013 in the 'what is your favorite sport?' poll conducted by gallup, making it the fourth most popular American sport)
The World Cup final was a surprisingly big deal in the US four years ago, and it seems that a lot of people think that this may be a breakthrough year for the popularity of the sport in the US. Then again I think people have been saying that for quite a long time.

I guess baseball fans get so rabid over soccer's popularity is that soccer getting popular could signal baseball finally dropping off the cliff and slipping into irrelevance, considering its 30 year trend of declining popularity. {/cheap dig}

interesting interesting interesting
