Day of Defeat Version 2.0
« Reply #30 on: February 13, 2002, 11:26:04 AM »
I finally made it online last night for about 30 minutes of playing!! And I like it.  While I'd already uninstalled RtCW I'll be ditching the MOH:AA MP demo tonight as DOD 2 is far superior in most categories.

One thing I noticed was some of the maps appear to be smaller in geography than RtCW and MOH:AA.  I feel more confined in much the way MOH:AA's "Stalingrad" map did.  Where as I loved MOH:AA "The Hunt" map with it's spaciousness.

Another thing was the M1 has far too much upward motion/recoil after beiung fired. WAY Too much. It's as if they modeled a 98lb Judy Garland holding the thing.  I've shot the M1 many times and even holding the rifle in a casual manner it won't do what they have modelled.   I'm a big guy (6'5" and 280lbs) and I can literally hold the M1 steady and firmly enough that even firing as fast as I can I can keep it so that the thing stays on target easily enough. The armpit/shoulder region tends to get sore from the kickBACK after firing several clips in short order though :)

And I found out REAL fast that "Overlord" is a bad MP gameplaying map.

They made the garand kick like a mule to better balance it against the Kar98... a bad move in my opinion, but we'll see how it plays out.  I think the Kar98 has ended up being a far superior weapon in there now as a result.

The limitations of the Half-Life engine make for the small, cramped city maps.  You simply can't have an open area or it will start chuggin'.

Here's an interesting interview with the developers of DoD:

I still like the garand better, I need a higher rate of fire because my aim sucks BAD.

The M1 Carbine is awesome in there if you like a high rate of fire.

Yup, had 30 kills (a few flag captures) with it before I died in one game (anzio I think) ended it all with 74 to 17, #1 in the game :)

Got a DOD question for you all. Is there a way to bind more than one command to a key or mouse button? What I'd like to do (if possible) is make my mouse3 button  ,pick grenade, throw grenade, pick previous weapon.. is it possible to bind that all to one press of the button?

Well, since that's what we like to refer to that as 'cheating', no.

I was under the impression it was legal considering it was  published on that page.

I think what Kratzer is saying is that is not welcome in DoD and many servers have stuff in place to catch and boot those who use it.

See what happens to cheaters?

Now, what he's doing and what you are proposing are obviously quite different, but don't you think the fun of the game is taking part, and being able to do these things quickly enough to have the desired result?

Thanks for the link to the interview. I understand what they did now (re: recoil).
Spent about three hours playing last night. It's tough, it's challenging and it's a hell of a lot of fun. :)

Install gamespy arcade, then go into the DoD room for half-life, refresh the list, order by ping, and find an open one with the lowest ping you can find - they are all pretty much the same after that.

All seeing eye works great.

Pretty tough game though, prefer the Garand or the M1 Carbine (MG42 damn fun too!). :)
