I wonder if F2G-2 ever went to World War 2?

Something about the F2G caused some major malfunctions. The F2G only had a top speed of 450mph, and it had lateral stability problems.

I don't think it saw combat.

Goodyear FG2-2 "Super Corsair" look pretty good that FG2 have Bubble canopy like North American P-51D "Mustang" and probably much faster than any prop plane, but im not sure if FG2 is the fastest prop fighter and i like to learn more about that Fighter plane.

Two things.

1. It never saw combat or for that matter squadron strength. The contract was cancelled before serious production could begin for two reasons F8F and F4U-4.

2. It was very fast at sea level. 400MPH at 3,500HP.

I have full performance charts compared to the P-51, F8F, F7F, P-47 and others on my webpage.

Thanks! All I know that F4U-4 went to war at Japan before WW2 was ending. =S=

I must contest. I believe the reasons it was cancelled were due to the lateral stability issues and engine overheating problems.

Yeah I believe your right about that and they only make them 10 Goodyear F2G-2 Super Corsair(BuNo. 88459/88468).

I disagree. The Super Corsair was canceled because the war was winding down, and they simply had no need for it.

Aircraft were heading into the jet age, supersonic speeds (in a few more years at least), and very hight altitude fighting. The Super Corsair's strengths were speed on the deck and climb rate, something that didn't matter so much in the upcoming jet era.

I have Don Armstrongs book (He was the chief test pilot on the F2G) he details the enlargement of the rudder correcting any lateral control issues. The Co2 levels in the cockpit were never really overcome but the solution was to use Oxegen all the time.

The Navy did accept some for delivery but the end of the war and lack of a mission doomed it in the end. The -4 could fill the same roll while not using the R-4360 needed for B-29's. That is another hidden factor.

I saw the Super Corsair up and personal a few years ago. Note: no bores on the wings for machine guns. She was to be used primarily for anti-kamikaze duty, according to Odegaard, and yes, she is a monster, in size and performance.

I saw her close up also, she is a beautiful bird. I watched it go into a steep climb and it didn't look to have a ton of troubles when it was goin verticel and stalling. Although it didn't hang on its nose for very long. (shrugs)

I would bug that guy to death about the details of the airplane.

I always wondered how those guys can own those planes without testing it to see what it could do.

B-29 used the Wright R-3350. P&Ws R-4360 was still early in the development stages when it was selected by Vought for the F2G-2 and by Republic for the XP-72 "Superbolt". Both were cancelled, but not for a lack of performance. The XP-72 made 490 mph on test flights and nearly 430 mph right on the deck, but had a higher rated 3,450 hp -13 engine, whereas the F2G-2 was powered by the -4 version of 3,000 hp.
