My Dad and I put a Pinto body on a 1943 Willy's Jeep frame. We dropped a 305 into the Pinto and made a hunting ride out of it. I also had another Willy's with another 305 in it that would get 4 MPG and had three fuel tanks. It was my off-road beat the handsomehunk in the jacked up lift kit (insert 4x4 here) on the power line. I had to go back several times and pull guys out or carry them home and then bring 'em back the next day with shovels to pull their heavy trucks outta the swamp they got stuck in.

Looks like a hell of alot of fun - too bad the peanut gallary had to quote statements from Readers Digest.

As for the most offroad capable SUV, Ive got to vote for the Defender 90. All balls, no leather.

I used to want one of these real bad - bought a Cherokee instead because I needed more room.

Either way - you made some gas station owner very happy that day.

I'm still wondering why they stopped imported the Disco.

That's perfect stuff for H2's. Deep sand for those tall tires and torque. However, most other places a CJ will run circles around it.

If I had to go off-road, I'd still take my XTerra before I'd take a H2.

You don't need 31inch tires if your car is having portal axles (portal hubs).
Land Rovers are pretty good thought still not in the same class with Volvo's old C303, Pinzgauer or Unimog.

For offroading I'd take C303, Pinzgauer or Unimog over any overweight Hummer... Those are too big and heavy (IMHO of course).
They don't have leather seats or electric windows or air conditioning but you really don't miss those when you're stuck in a deep mud in the middle of nowhere

I use to drive Unimog's in the Army and they are great offroad vehicles, amazing what they can do. And don't think I ever managed to get one stuck. Massive ground clearence, awsome fun to drive.
