There may be a backlash against U.S. and coalition forces in the days and weeks ahead, but it will probably be short-lived. The Baathists who were carrying out some of the terrorist attacks were doubtlessly being encouraged by the knowledge that Saddam was still free and defiant. Surrendering meekly should take the wind out of their sails, in the long run.
An Iraqi official just made the statement that..."there will be a trial. He will be allowed a lawyer. If he cannot afford one, the court will appoint him one."
It appears that the principles of democracy are gaining popularity.
