Consider this:
You have been dogfighting this guys for a turn or two and a old packet with your old position gets lost in the net-ether and gets delivered to Your NME's FE. On your FE your behind him, on his FE you warp in front of him, he takes a shot and hits, you warp back to the rear position (what he sees, not what you see), you fire at him, your FE recieves the damage packets from his FE, you hear cannon pings, you go down.
The net is a *huge* internetwork of thousands of servers an millions of users with trillions of packets, and packet loss occurs, packet delay occurs - this sort of thing wouldnt even show up on your conection beacon, so it would look fine to you, no warps from where you were sitting, maybe from where he was siting - did you ask him how he managed to hit you?
This explains what happened, in a simple and explainable manner and no cheating was involved. Occam's razor (the simplest answer is often the correct one).
