Going to Oregon for a week...
« on: March 25, 2004, 05:40:53 PM »
My G/F's cousin is getting married in Klamath Falls at the end of April...

Need to know a few things...

1.What are the liqour laws like in Oregon? Can you buy it at Convienence Stores/Supermarkets? or is it through Distributors/Package Stores only?

2. Were flying into Portland instead of Medford because its cheaper and less layovers. What is I-5 like through Oregon?

3. Are there any cool places to stop in between the two? Museums and such?

Thanks ahead of time!
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

I will answer your questions because nobody else is.

1. You can only buy 'hard' liquor at state run liquor stores.  Despite this, EVERYONE drinks in Oregon.  Oregon is defined as noun: 6 million gallons of water with nowhere to go on Saturday night.

2. You realize that you have a 7 hour drive from PDX to Klamath falls, right?  Any time and money you 'saved'  has been destroyed.  Sorry.

3. Nope.  7 hours of soul sucking emptiness at 55 and 65mph.

depends how long you want the drive to take.  most of the 'things to see' require a stop and most of the day.  Silver falls park is on the way but an all day thing.

the fastest way, and best roads is to cross the mountains at eugene and finish the trip on the east side.  (you can make the trip in about 5 hours this way, vs almost 7 if you go I-5 all the way south)

watch out for cops at woodburn, albany, halsey, and eugene/springfield area(the road gets better at springfield, but the speed limit drops to 55)

once your in K-falls, check out crater lake if the roads are open.

If you go to Seattle first, Portland sucks.

absolutely, and you guys remember that (especialy you Californians),  it sucks here so don't move here.  call all your friends who have already moved here, tell them to come home.  really, I mean it, get dial'n.

it's a great place to visit but horrible place to live.  Don't move here.

Spend 7 hours on an airplane with my Girlfriend and her father and you'd be drinking too. J/K I would never DWI, there will be plenty of time to get soused before the wedding which is on the summer solstice.

Thanks for tips on making it South faster capt! The directions will surely be used.

if you have access to a computer when you hit the airport.  (or check from home before you leave, but the info won't be as fresh)
check out.
  http://www.tripcheck.com/

it'll let you know road conditions.

some important things to keep in mind once you leave I-5.

1.   log trucks and chip trucks are heavy, fast(most are paid by the load not the hour), and you are hard to see.  they will not get out of your way.  they will run you over.

2.   if you drive slower than other cars use the turn-outs and let people pass.  you will be ticketed if cars are lined up behind you and you pass a turn-out without using it.

3.  in the passes ice can show up at almost any time.  often 'black-ice' which you can't tell from a wet road.  watch for the mile markers with reflectors and reflectors on the pavement, the reflectors turn blue when the temp dips below freezing.

4.  the mountain roads twist and turn a lot, and are kind of intimidating to people from the flat lands (not sure where you are from).  don't worry, the corners are banked for speed, keep the pedal down.

5.  if you smoke DO NOT FLICK BUTTS OUT OF THE WINDOW.  fire is a big deal hear, and even though it's not the season, and you likely couldn't start one if you wanted to,   the punishment is just short of a lynching.
