How much fighter pilot AMBITION do you have?
« on: March 26, 2004, 01:56:13 PM »
Just curious. There are as many reasons to play this game as there are people playing it. Some play for score, some play to win the war, some like 1v1 fights, some like jabo and base capture, some like CV ops etc. Different skills are involved in each activity. But nearly all of us fly fighter planes every tour. So how good are we, and how good do we want to be? At one end of the scale, we have the pork-n-auger guys. They could learn all their skills at the Al Qa'eda Academy of Flight! Take offs and landings. Oh wait, they don't even do landings. :lol At the other end of the scale there are the fighter jocks. No name dropping or hero worship, but these are the guys who fine tune their sticks and make sure everything's dead right, practise in the DA, try their hand in duelling ladders...

And then there's the rest of us. On a scale of 0 to 10 Pork-n-Auger represents no ambition ie 0, and DA/duelling ladder enthusiasts have plenty so they get 10. How do you rate your ambition? Note - not the same thing as skill.

I'll go first then.  I enjoy CV ops, USN planes and jabo - plus of course the combat arising out of attempts to capture/defend bases. But I'm not much good in T&B planes and never really fly them. The F6F is about the best turner I ever fly. That and a goon. I rarely visit the DA. I have never been interested in duelling ladders.

The good thing about AH stats/scores is that there are so many ways to analyse how you're doing. I just try to keep as good a k/d as possible, and land all kills. That's about it. I give myself about a 6 on the ambition scale. Maybe a little either way. I'm happy to get by.

Now it's your turn! Where are you on the 0 <---> 10 scale of AH fighter pilot ambition?

I'm often at 0 and 10 at the same instant.

My only ambition is : killing that red things that fly and crawl and next make the inconless things explode :)

7 maybe

I'm nerd enough to know the weak spots of all the planes (like la7s wep doesn't work above 8k) and do mentally analyze ACM and screw ups I make.  Occasionally I'll even head to the DA with hotshots like Urchin, Lazerus, Nomak and "study" merges or overshoot stuff.

If I was really dedicated I'd fly smarter though, grab much more alt etc..  I can't resist upping an almost vulched field in a g10 with 25 gas though, hence I'll never be a 10 on tha scale....  If I get abve 10k on climbout my ADD kicks in and I'm looking for a snack.

I'm not sure if you by ambition means how we would LIKE our skill to be on a 0-10 scale, or how strong our ambition is to get better than our current skill?

Everyone wants to be a 10 in skill (if you didn't have to work for it), so the first one is pretty irrelevant, but if we are talking about the latter, I've pretty much accepted my skill-level, and it hasn't changed much since the first "beginner-boom" in the time after I started AH.
I'm not trying out new planes, not reading about ACMs or studying my own or others films to find out what went wrong. My skill varies by the amount of time I spend in CT/MA (SA seems to be the one thing lacking most after a break from flying), but I don't fly in the DA or TA to keep myself sharp.
If I did all those things, I'm sure I could gain a bit more skill, but it would be too little compared to the work I would have to put into it and there still would be someone better out there anyway.
I have been part of the ladder in the past, so I can't deny some ambition, but overall I would give myself a low 3.

When I first began flight sims, I could have cared less about being a proficient fighter jock :)  I only cared about getting off the ground with a mouse.

As the years went by it slowly progressed from buffer to strictly JABO then on to strictly fighters.  Nowadays I think I've transcended the 'flow' of things... or I've evolved beyond the traditional flight sim guages.  Now, I fight, I JABO, I buff occasionally... I do whatever I feel like at the time.  I'll do it all.

But as to beetle's scale.... I'll put myself at a 6, maybe 7.  It changes from week to week.

I'm probably average for AH, spent waaay too much money on video cards, $100 dollar joy sticks and pedals, books and far, far too much time playing a variety of online flight sims....

Kill more than I die, get the odd 7-8 kill run - normailly in something with lots of ammo - not that good at acm but can manage the basics, do have good sa and am a good shot after lots of practice.

My intensity & the risk levels I fly at are dynamically controlled by my k:d. I like to keep it around 2.0 so if I'm doing better than that I'll take the jug down lower and dogfight more with it knowing it'll drop by pushing myself into a harder situation, if it starts dropping too much I'll make a high sortie at the edge of a dweeb train & pick off 5 to 10 to bring it back up.

No idea where that would put me on beet1es ambition scale, cause I'm really tring to push myselfy getting kills at a disadvantage in the first case & setting myself up a favorable comfort zone to increase kill count in the second case. But I'll have no qualms about getting up midflight to grab another beer when it's emtpy in either case, how ambitious is that?

Lately I'm doing a lot less jabo & buff runs and a lot more buff hunting. Planes of choice are big american iron , jug & hog, I rarely fly axis crap.

I think im on the 9-10 Level..

I have participated in all the dueling ladders that have ever been created,  been in ALMOST every King of the Hill competition,  have participated in Wild Wednsday back when it was around..  And i generally like the DA.  I may not have the necessary tools,  such as Rudder pedals,  or even a good computer,  but i like to succeed,  even in this virtual world.

I came to this game with a history of a waneing 9-10 in an older sim.  Taking the time to learn and understand the dynamics and technic of what goes on in a fight is part of it.  Another part is practice, practice, practice, so that what you do is no longer 'in reaction to', but an 'automatic next-step'.  I dont feel compelled to do the latter, so I guess that would put me around a 5 :)
