No, I did not read the Yahoo link, I read ESPN, they didn't mention it. But if that is the case, then yes, they screwed themselves, unless, of course, they figured that Eli and dad were letting the Giants know also, the team he wants to play for. Who knows who else he told?

they could easily have kept their mouth shut and traded him as a valuable commodity.  who'd want a guy who didn't want to be playing for you?

Then you might as well just do away with the draft, if everyone didn't want to play for a bad team and got their way, then what is the use having it?

I don't care what you are trying to do, anybody is better to have with you than someone who doesn't want to be there.

Again, then what is the point of the draft? You think everyone who got drafted by the Bengals the last ten years wanted to play there?

if thats how he felt, he was doing the right thing by warning them he wasn't looking forward to being on their team.

He is doing the wrong thing by undermining the foundation of a league that is going to make him a millionaire. It's called being selfish.

or he could just be worried he's gonna get hurt before he has a chance to shine enough to make endorsment deals.

you don't often see guys from bad teams making much cash.  and a football career can end rather unexpectedly.

From what I've been reading, the Giants were the only team out there who was offering anything in an attempt to get manning. The chargers pretty much said that they were not offering enough, and the deal looked like it wasn't going to go through. When the Skins came into the picture, it was theorized that they were trying to get Robert Gallery, and the cooling of that trade rumor lead some to speculate that the Skin's were content that the Chargers were going to take Eli with the first, and they could trade with the Raiders/Cards/Giants and still get their man (although with Eli off the board at #1, they would have had to go before NY, who presumably would have taken him).

Now any team who wants the draft Gallery is going to have to trade up to the top spot to ensure that they ge him. If the Chargers weren't getting the value they wanted by dangling Eli, now they are trying again by dangling Gallery.

Personally, when you have a top 4 that are so close as they are this year (Gallery, Manning, Wiliams, Taylor) I don't think that you're going to be able to move the pick with anything approaching a good deal. I hope they keep the pick, draft Gallery, and use the Eli nonsense as an excuse to downplay the fan outcry that is sure to result from such an un-sexy pick.

If he is afraid of getting hurt, he is in the wrong league. And he would be on a team with one of the top young running backs in the league. He wouldn't be asked to pass all the time. And if I remember correctly, didn't the Giants offensive line play, well, offensive?

There is so much fiction in that statement it isn't funny. You are paid in according to where you were drafted, every team has a salary cap and every team has a rookie alotment. You can get injured on any team, remember last year's Pats team? Who had more injuries than them? And Roosevelt Colvin's injury may be career threatening. I think they went pretty far, the Superbowl I think.

Breaking news on ESPN, Chris Mortensen is reporting Manning will sit out the season if the Chargers draft him.

Well, so much for worrying about making money. They should make a new rule to keep this crap from happening, like if you do that you can't re-enter the draft for three years. That will put an end to that.

Maybe the Yankees will draft Manning as a pitcher so he can sit out in a AAA club until his NFL draft option expires.  :p

BTW if Archie wants to look out for his son then so be it. If I was San Diego I would draft offensive linemen and trade off some dead weight to have as many first through third round picks as possible.

There again though how can one player without a decent supporting cast turn a team around? San Diego needs to work on the O-Line and D-Line to get some building blocks. But that is always one of the last areas to build within the pros.

"Un-sexy" or not Gallery is the guy to pick if you have the number one slot in the draft. Throw out Williams because he isn't eligible for the draft now and most likely will not be eligible this weekend.

"In fact, as of late Thursday, the Giants had not phoned the Chargers. Said one New York source: "Whatever long-distance carrier we've got better not plan on getting rich off this thing." Giants officials speculated that San Diego executives would call on Friday, but that was simply supposition. There is a good chance the Giants will wait until Saturday, when San Diego is on the clock, and see how the Chargers feel then about choosing a player who has hinted that he could sit out the 2004 season and re-enter the draft in 2005."

I agree, even if Manning wanted to go to the Chargers, I've been advocating Gallery since before the Combine (although then I thought we might be able to trade down and get him, and that both Manning and Rothlesburger would go in the top 4).

As for Willliams... Opps, I meant Fitzgerald. I can't keep track of all the Wideouts in this Draft. I think that Mike Williams is a bit overrated, but there's always Roy Williams who could go in the top 5, and lets not forget Reggie Williams (oi, I had to go look that up, just to get my Williams's straight ).

This has been a very fun pre-draft off season, I'm not looking forward to the pre-camp lull.

**** Eli Manning.

Give him a choice, play for the Chargers, or fight with the United States Marine Corps.

Didn't Elway do something like this, by declaring that he wouldn't play for the Baltimore Colts because they sucked big time, so the Colts traded his draft option to the Broncos?

Wasn't it the Seahawks that he wouldn't play for?

I hate soccer as much as the next american, but i will admit that the people that play it on a professional level are far better athletes then american football players. Same with basketball, baseball, and hockey.
