LG 42" Plasma MZ-42PZ45v
« on: May 11, 2004, 04:55:43 AM »
Mia gave me 2 birthday presents today. The first was a dirty diper and the 2. was that i could go out and find myself a new tv on her mothers credit card :D .

I have looked at the LG 42" Plasma MZ-42PZ45v tv cause its quite "cheap", but i have no experience with plasma tv's. Ive heard that the screen can "burn" if you leave them on for a long time.

1. does anyone have this model (LG 42" Plasma MZ-42PZ45v)?

2. Are plasma tv's any good?

3. Are there huge diffs in quality and or "generations"

4. should i wait for large lcd tvs to come down in price?

Im in no hurry but I do love new toys so i dont wanna wait to long :D

-edit- any good websites that reviews plasma's, lcd's and home cinema gear?

The only con to a plasma tv is that they discharge in about 2 years.

LCD are better but not the hottest...

I prefer the Sony flat tube TV's I have the largest one they make which is a @ 46" but weighs like 250 lbs..

No problem bud!

Can never do enough research on these fancy tv's!  Especially when they cost as much or more than a car!!

a few things on my list:

-reliablity

-lifespan (some only last 5 years!)

-repair cost (some have lamps that only last ~100hrs and  cost a lot)

I guess the same thing you look at when buying a car.

Use your monitor, sit closer.  Spend money on something more fun than an idiot box.  :)

I wanted to buy a plasma 2 years ago and wound up getting a projection HDTV. Bigger screen (65" vs 50") for a LOT less money (under $2K). The downside is it's a space hog. I figure by the time this one wears out plasma's will be plentiful and affordable.

Nilsen, I'd recommend a DLP front projector instead.

I bought an Optoma H30 for $1500 and a Carada 16x9 1.78 screen for $600. So, for $2100, I'm watching gorgeous DVD's and DirecTV on a 96" screen. It's very unlike TV. It's like being at the movies. The DLP home theater projectors have the plasma screens beat for price, size and "bang for the buck".

You can read all about projectors, plasma TV's and LCD TV's here, and make up your own mind.

And here's a great site for reading all about home theater projectors: http://www.projectorcentral.com/home.cfm

I considered DLP, but was worried the screen would get damaged too easy. (I have friends that drink.)

I use to work for a DLP projector company.  The up front cost is cheaper than a plasma or LCD but in the long run you may spend as much.  The lamps in those things last no more than 3,000 hours and can cost up to $500.  But you can't beat having a true theater experience with a DLP projector!  You can get an 8 foot picture with no issues concerning brightness or contrast.   Plus you can hook up your compooter to it to play AH!!

Tough choices!

i have thought about a projector, but it is not practical in my livingroom. The design of the room, very large windows and no walls suitable for projection takes them out of the "race". I would have to move everything around to make it possible and that is not an option for several reasons.
