with the con, the weekend and so, I dont think that many people will look into it.

Today I had a big surprise from my parents. After being with no money for nearly 1 year they gave me the chance to upgrade my computer (YEAH

). So I got a new micro and a new motherboard. (So now I have a 600Mhz Athlon

, no more 8FPS while fighting at low level FEAR ME NIKIS!

)

The problem is that the MB has a sound card built in it,as the previous I had. The one I had before gave me no problems ,but this one just refuses to play any sounds.

I cant start AH (Initialization failed with -5, mainSN_FAILED -2 message when I start it), I cant play sounds...and I know why but not how to solve the problem.

In the driver disk with the motherboard there were most of the drivers...but I have this "wave device for voice modem" thing, it keeps finding it each time I restart the computer. WIndows asks me for drivers but I ain't got any!!!!!!...nor in the CD nor in the HD, nor in the Win98 CD...

I have the soundcard activated in the BIOS, so it isnt that.

I went to the web of the builder, to find that the downloads are IMPOSSIBLE (DNS failed, ALL FTP sites are down

), so now I don't know what to do.

The Motherboard is an Aopen AK33 MB.

Please WTF is that "wave device for voice modem"?...and WTF do I do now?

Go to Windows Device Manager, disable the onboard sound card (sometimes this is done in the BIOS), install your old sound card and
you should be ok.

I did this to a Pentium 166 that had a built in sound card on the Intel motherboard. I disabled the onboard sound card in the BIOS and installed my AWE64 instead. Works better and I now have a joystick port.

The driver should be on your modem disk.

problem is-my ex motherboard had too an integrated SB so I have no sound card to put on

i got that same error when i was listening to live365 using my winamp.

i quit winamp, it fixed it.

make sure you're not playing any other sounds or music etc etc.

Have you tried getting newer drivers from AOpen's site? Or reading their trouble shooting guide there? Have you reinstalled DirectX?

If that doesn't work, try going to the site of the chipset manufacturer, probably Via, maybe AMD.

You could also try the sound chip's manufacturer.

But anyway I am sure it is playing no sounds, guaranteed

Karnak, AOpen website has a download section, where you can't download a $h1t because ALL FTP servers are down! all!.

Thanks for the VIA adress. I'm downloading a file from there right now...

But I dont think it will solve a lot

I have that same file in the CD and it serves for no purpose (At least not to make the card to play sounds)

two things you can do RAM:

Go into the system settings and under the device manager tab, check "disable in this hardware profile"

That will kill the nag message. But it has to do with the modem's sound output, not a big deal but if you can find drivers for them it will also fix them.

As for the onboard sound card, most that I've seen have a single jumper on the motherboard (unless it's entirely software regulated) that disabled the sound, and won't interfer with a normal sound card. (which I have done, with an Amprton)

OK, downloaded latest drivers, the wave modem thing is solved now, but...

well, now I can't hear the sounds. The speakers are silent. I put a MP3, for instance, and the realplayer shows it is running (before solving the modem problem the MP3 won't run)...but I can't hear anything.

I tried to go into AH (with no sounds, yeaH

), but the system crashed before showing the clipboard, screen black, hard reset required.

Reinstalled directX 7.0a for no effect. Tried to run a DXdiag, but it didnt even start (double click, nothing happened)...

Well I am now really sad and annoyed

please, help me

Ram did you do a complete reinstall of windows when you changed your motherboard ???
If not what did you do with windows anything? or just replace the MB and cpu etc ?
If you kept your original copy of windows that may be your problem, because windows will think you still have your old motherboard and chipsets and be trying to talk to them incorrectly.
What you need to do is go to device manager and highlight "computer" now click on "view devices by connection" when here look for a section called "PNP Bios" and delete it. Try to close windows, if it locks now just power off and restart, this will force windows to recognise all the new hardware you have recently fitted.
Of course all of the above assumes you did not clean install windows or already do the above.

Edited cos it was late and i typed "PCI bus" when it shoulda been "PNP Bios"

And Texace is correct in msg below motherboards with "built in" sound or graphics should be avoided like the plague for any gamer.

Sad to say, RAM, that you might need to get a whole new motherboard. It's not usually a good idea to get an intergrated sound card if you don't have to. You might try to get a new sound card and plug it in.

My previous MB had built in sound card, and never gave me a problem. In fact I was quite happy with it and was the reason that I had no problem to get this MoBo (it is a beauty and was quite cheap for its quality). In fact I planned to get a new sound card but when they told me that it had a built in one I had no problem to get it.

I am planning on getting a real SC and disable the onboard one. Is not hard to do, change one jumper and disable it on the bios. But I hate to spend money on something if I don't have to, so please I need help trying to fix it

I reinstalled windows98, and Dx7.0a again. The system seems to run smooth as silk, the system settings don't show any conflict, and the sys tray has the little icon showing that the sound is on.

AH works now, and realplayer and jukebox read the MP3s. I see it by the graphic that it is reading hte MP3.

But I get no sounds. I tried it with headphones and speakers, dunno if the sound plug is defectuous but I doubt it, because hte micro plug seems not to be working either.

I feel I an very near a solution but I dont find why I can't hear sounds...seems that all is running smooth ,but still I hear nothing!

please if you have some tip, tell it.

(already flew a sortie in AH...30FPS at 15K...used to have 15-20...YOOHOOOOOOO

BTW I had the chance to get the most expensive MB in the shop,as my parents were paying , not me. But I am not a F·"!$ing opportunist and, different than you'd have done( surely you would have got the most expensive given the chance not to pay it), I took a good but not too expensive MoBo. And even I took this one because it had onboard sound card, so not making my parents pay more than the neccesary.

And no, my family has no money problems (they are mostly the other side

). Is simply that I have something called dignity and morale

Back to bussiness...ok, reinstalled windows (for the 5th time

), and now the system doesnt accept the device...while before it did!!!

In the system screen, the device -VIA PCI Audio controller (WDM)- is marked with an exclamation. In properties says that

"NTKERN.VXD and MMDEVLDR.VXD for this device haven't been able to load the device driver (code 2)."

I searched this files in the HD and CD and they aren't in my system (and I am sure they weren't before, either).

Now the joystick device doesnt load ..no more AH for now

(I suppose that it is because it depends on the sound card and as this inst configured, the stick device wont load.).

Oh ,well...please please any help you can give will be welcome...

This is driving me crazy

(BTW renfield I have no problems in changing the MoBo, in the shop, if it doesnt work properly
