WW2OL's new terrain: WOW

Time to eventually skip AH:

Dinant, Meuse valley, before:

After:

The programmer's word, Killer:

Quote
Let me explain :)

Before is the current wwiiol 1km DEM satellite data. That's the terrain resolution we play on now.

After is the new 90meter DEM data from the space shuttle SRTM radar mission where they mapped the earth's elevation with radar.

That is a high resolution terrain data set for the meuse valley somewhere around Dinant using the new SRTM shuttle data.

Forget textures, it's just got a default texture stamped on it.

It's the elevation data that is new.

It still needs new river technology, new road technology, new coastline technology and new texturing methods and 3D buildings and trees.

It's also already coded for multithreaded loading, ridding it of annoying pauses as terrain data streams in.

Its just a higher res terrain map, what does that have to do with skipping AH. What a stupid statment. We have terrain with that resolution now.

I'm trying, honestly.
I'm doing infantry, not flying.
I'm playing in a squad (250 Hispana, 30+ members, good coordination).
I'm trying to get into it.
Trying to get the most of my 30-day trial.
I've been promoted, and killed 20+ in a single mission as a rifleman.

But:

WW2OL bores me to death as of today as a soldier
WW2OL makes me laugh histerically as a pilot

Dunno, people like it. It must be me.

Are you talking about the contours of the hill? that looks ok, the actual look of the fields is pretty lame looking.

Does the flight model still blow goats?

The second pic really looks bad.  Really bad.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

I do like the elevation, and it does say "forget textures" on quoted part.

I think that's a really cool addition to immersion, that the topography is being taken from real life data, and not just sculpted form guesswork. I think that's a very cool feature.

When they get to 1942/43 Pacific, then maybe I'll give them another try.

The elevation looks "ok" but so what many games have terrains like that.

I will gladly forget the textures, they do look bad.

You arent alone. We differ in that after long breaks from playing I return and get "into it" for a few weeks then the boredom sets in. Flying is a joke.

It just doesn't sustain the fun factor for me.

Killer wrote "Forget the textures" as they are just the default ones and have not been changed for the terrain. The picture is showing the terrain only. Obviously the side of a cliff does not have a farmers field on it.

If you say you hate the textures after this post then you are just confirming you can't read.

I cancelled too.

Not that it was a bad game. I had fun, but there's not enough room in my day for AH, AND WWIIOL along with the rest of my stuff.

And being that I enjoy being a pilot more than a rifleman, I stick with AHII.

Maybe someday, one game will do BOTH ground AND air combat well. They'll get my subsciption.
