When are we gonna start actually securing our homeland?

I live in Southern California. There are estimates of up to 2 million illegal immigrants in California today. Schools, hospuitals and roads are jammed to the limit.

A couple of weeks ago the Border Patrol did some unannounced sweeps in the "Inland Areas" of California. These were all within 10 miles of where I live and were 100 miles or so from the border.

Over 400 illegals were caught and deported.

Now the Bush administration is saying "stop the sweeps" and Kerry won't jump in to disagree I'm sure. You see the 5% Hispanic vote is important when 1% either way could win this election.

Seems kind of strange to me that the issue of "illegals" is one that is intermixed with upsetting "legal" voters.

Has anyone explained to the "legal" immigrants that they are paying more taxes, losing jobs, etc. because of the "illegal" influx?  Or are they just trying to get the rest of their families in?

Most illegal immigrants are here to better their lives and those of their families by working hard, taking jobs most Americans will not.  This country's heart and soul was forged by immigration, both legal and illegal.  I'm very surprised to see you posting the thread, Midnight, thats a pretty conservative approach you've taken on the issue.

That being said, I agree, we need to beef up the borders and process these people, just think of the terrorists that want to get into the country to raise havoc...its very easy to cross the border and get into the country.

You're right. I am very "conservative" on this issue. I also think English should be mandated as the national language.

Did anyone listen to the interview?

Oh no!!!!!! I agree with MT.

What can we control if we can't control our borders.  But would we want to suspend the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878?  I think not.

If you think the Patriot Act is a problem suspension of the Posse Comitatus Act could conceivably open the doors to all manner of martial law.

No I didn't listen to the interview.

Living in Texas I have come to apreciate the majority of Mexican immigrants.  I have no idea how many are legal or illegal but they are for the most part family oriented/hardworkers.  That being said we need to figure out a good way to tighten our borders.

I actually fear the northern border more than our southern.  It seems like our Canadian neighbors would not blink an eye if a van load of terrorist came south to cause trouble.  I am of the opinion they would boohoo a terrorist attack for about 3 seconds then tell us we had it coming.

mt.. I agree with you but the last gov we had encouraged the illegals as did all the democrat politicians... it isn't republicans calling for drivers licences for illegals or blocking english as the offical state language or pushing the PC and laughable term "undocumented immigrants"

I was fond of the term wetback as is my girlfriend and most of her friends.

The story is that most of the mexicans that are about second generation are as much against the illegals as you are.   They rightly feel that it is costing them for no reason.

you are right tho... once the democrats started using the mexicans like they do the colored folk as class warfare...

there is no stopping it... that is the legacy of democrats.

Nice try lazs, but this one can't be laid at the dems feet. Bush is kissing up to Vincente Fox like he was Fox's lap dog. Remember Bush's "amnesty" proposal. Both sides want the "illegal vote".

Yep, this one cuts across party lines.  Bush knows better, too.  I would vote against him just for this issue alone, except his oponent is no better.

My position on Illegals, is that they should all come down to our office and get a consultation. Then they should hire my firm to file a few applications on their behalf, then get deported after paying us.

Illegal immigrants flooding across our borders will be the ruin of the county unless it's stopped. They sneak over by the millions and the next thing you know, they are voting and effecting elections and sucking up resourses

I think I heard that about 500,000 have been caught trying to get in this year so far. I wonder how many have not been caught.

Millions and millions are here illegally and it makes my blood boil to think about it.

Those sweeps in Ca are amazing. I was listening to the radio when I was there and I heard about these Hispanic groups complaining that the sweeps had made the illegals "afraid" to go to work on the buses. WTF??!

Presumably they're talking about legal hispanic citizens who are worried that they might be 'deported' because they can't prove they are citizens.  If they're riding the bus, then they might not have a drivers license.

Think 'Born in East LA'.  Remember the story?

No, they specifically said the illegal's where frightened to use the public buses to go to work ( I wonder why?) And they ride the buses because they are illegal and can't get a license.

And they also mentioned that when the INS would leave some of these areas, Hispanics would protest in the streets waving Mexican flags.

We need to get all the illegals shipped out.
