owever, I did learn today that Yankee is actually and originally a derogatory term. According to my dictionary, it was originally a derogatory term for Hollanders and Dutch and later the Dutch in New York started calling English settlers in Connecticut "Yankees" as a derogatory term. So there you have it, it actually is a bad no-no wash-your-mouth-out-with-soap word and the hammer should fall swift and heavy on anyone who uses it. In contrast, "Jap" is just an abbreviation. Uh ohh, now I know I can't go to the AH Con...Yankee is gonna beat me up!

USA history starts in europe sometimes it's forgotten.

My favorite part of this thread beyond the "Name This" is how it moved from Racism to fried chicken.  Thats why I love the BBS :D

Personally I'm from Illinois, and instead of Illinoisian, I prefer "Redneck"  :aok

I look forward to shooting down some kraut, jap, ruskie, brit, and yank planes tonight online. When the civil rights discussion is over, you guys are free to come online and we can all shoot the crap out of each other and watch some Fox News in the process :aok

Have a good one everybody!

(continuing the hijack)

(QUOTE)

America is a continent and "Americans" cover quite a lot of peoples from varying countries. So since we all have to be so formal and afraid of everyone's feelings, we need to be clear in that it's USN/USAF/USMC for a reason and substitute the often used "American" with "US citizen" or "US warplane."

(UNQUOTE)

True, in the sense there are Asians and Africans and Europeans and Australians (dual continent/country) and Americans in the more specific sense of North Americans and South Americans and Antarcticans in the sense of penguins.

But unless there are other nations with "America" in their name, the only Americans based on national name come from the United States of America.  It's really USA, not just U.S.

Fun to see official entire names of nations, e.g.,

United States of America
United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Kingdom of Belgium
Canada
Republic of Finland
French Republic
Principality of Monaco
Union of Myanmar
Sultanate of Oman
State of Qatar
Most Serene Republic of San Marino
Swiss Confederation
Russian Federation
Federal Republic of Germany
Japan  ...

and that's where the thread got hijacked (taking fingerprints)....

I believe anyone who fought and indured the savagery of the military person from japan in ww2 has a right to call the military person from japan anything he or she wants. The rest of us maybe should call them what they want to be called within reason. But not put down just saying jap.If this skuzzy tried or did ban a ww2 vet for saying jap at least without several warnings.I would like to personally like to track him if it is a him down and kick his butt or at least try.So far as the rest of us goes if skuzzy is part of the mangement of ah than guess he has a right to do what he wants.
