Best game ever?
« on: September 29, 2004, 01:41:44 PM »
I was just browsing the web when I came across an article about Wolfenstein 3D. I thought to myself " Wow, I remember when that came out. It blew me away.". So then I began to think of what game just floored me the most when it came out. Not just graphics or gameplay or plot etc......... I mean as a whole.

The first one that came to mind was the Star Wars game were you were Han Solo in training. I forget the name. Then all of a sudden, like a shot out of the blue, a blast from the past if you will, it dawned on me...............

RESIDENT EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Man that game was of the hook. Killing, Strategy, Problem Solving. The game had it all. I remember playing for 35 hours straight, me and a friend trading off while the other cat-napped. IMHO, best break-through game ever.

"Breakthrough"?

I'd have to go with Wolfenstein3D or perhaps Civilization. But W3D defined the genre that about 30% of the games on the market fit into, that category did not even exist until then. Another that created a genre/category would be Warcraft, but I never cared for RTS that involved resource aquisition.

BTW, I bought Wolfenstein3D for my kid to play on his gameboy, it looks and sounds EXACTLY like the original :D

The PC games I consider the best (obviously everyone's list is going to be different):

Air Warrior 1.2/AWFW--the best ever.  Period.  I'd still play it if it was available.  Was doing in the '80's basically what AH is doing today.

DooM/DooM2--King of FPS (none of this doom3 crap, either).  Still superior to any new standalone FPS.  Co-op mode was brilliant.

Warcraft II--First really good RTS

Age of Empires 2--First RTS that was better than the above; I still play it unlike all other games on this list

Counter-Strike--best online FPS ever

"Chuck Yeager's Air Combat" - the first flight sim for the personal computer to have clouds that you could hide in/behind.

"Star Wars" in the sit-down cabinet with tinted glazed cockpit.  Awesome way to shut out the outside world.

Warbirds 2.something
Falcon 3
Grand Prix Legends
Doom
StarCraft
Diablo 2
Thief
X-wing and Tie Fighter
Jedi Knight

All the above game got me into a particular genre and held my attention for a long time. I played warbirds at $2/hour for years and could care less about the bill at the end of the month it held my attention more than any 3 of the above. But it burnt me out on flight sims though, played aces high for a while but it never had the same fun factor for me.
