No he is not.

5860 is nearer the mark for his rig, or should be.

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=150235

Thats my score with AMD 3500 1 gig mem and X800 pro modded to X800XT, 520 core 560 mem speeds.

Btw 3DM05 is virtually exclusively a graphics card test, the rest of the system makes very little difference.
I overclocked my cpu from 2.2 to 2.37 g and gained 20 points, however running AH i get a good fps increase.

If you browse some scores you will see slower cpus getting virtually the same score as long as they use the same graphics cards.

And who the hell is gonna buy 2 6600gt nvidias and SLI them when one X800XT gets the same score ?
The X800 will run all games full speed while the SLI 6600's will only work with games that Nvidia have coded for in the drivers and thats not many.

"Coded for in the drivers"?
I was under the impression that SLI was not game dependent but driver dependent, same as Voodoo SLI. That being as long as the drivers supported SLI the game would use it.
I used to have Voodoos running SLI, never had a problem running any Windows based games, support for SLI is in the drivers, not coded to specific games.
Some older games may need to be forced to use SLI, but that will be in option in future drivers.

Whole point was that a good starting point (at this time) would be a single 6800GT PCI-E, later on down the road you can add a second to really boost performance using SLI (something that ATI doesnt support at the moment).
Good example is the current 'High" score for 3Mark - 10533 using 2x6800 Ultras using SLI.

SLI = Higher performance at higher screen rez with AA etc turned up to max than a single card solution.

Wow 1686.... Something's wrong I think. From what I see with comparable systems with NON overclocked CPUs/GPUs I'm still behind the grade.

[Edit] This is with my Vid Card set to performance. When set to best quality i'm getting 1143.

Also don't forget Aquamark, another testing program out there.

Why? Becuase Aquamark (downloading it now) claims to use DX 7, 8, and 9 (not exclusively 9, like 3DMark05 -- which apparently won't run on a Ge Ti4400 128MB)

When buying an SLI system you should note that not all games work with this mode. Without the right SLI profile in the driver the game runs only on one card with SLI activated, and sometimes even more slowly than when SLI is deactivated. The game's age and level of 3D technology also play a large role.

And

Quote
Even our efforts to force SLI operation through the expanded driver settings had no effect. After talking with NVIDIA we learned the cause: SLI is not available with some games. NVIDIA has so-called SLI Profiles for games that are defined in the driver. The driver recognizes the game via application detection and executes the SLI mode (split or balancing) designated for that profile. If no SLI profile exists for a game, there is no SLI rendering. It is not possible to force SLI mode or generate your own profile. According to NVIDIA however the driver already contains over 50 profiles for games running with SLI. For newer titles this therefore means that SLI system owners have to wait for a new driver. But even then there is no guarantee that SLI will be possible with a particular game.

Read that review Cav.
Also read others where it says an option to force SLI is in upcoming drivers. You will have an option of 3 modes, you just choose which works best. This info was available at the time the article was written, Tom just decided to omit it (see explanation below).

Even then games are being added to the list all the time, it's now closer to 100 than 50. Still gonna work out that SLI will outperform any single card, especially as you increase the screen res and up AA etc.

Remember it's still in its infancy, gonna be problems at the start.
Still say a good bet is a single 6800GT then adding another further down the line to gain a big performance boost.

As for Tomshardware, I gave up relying on him for unbiased reviews a long long time ago. Well known he is 'in bed' with Intel and ATI.
One of his most notorious ones was putting a single Opteron up against dual Xeons and then saying the Xeons win. Well DUH guess they would. Tom 'sold out' many years ago to Intel. I used to be regular reader up till that point.

You can force SLI, Whels uses it now for AH2.
You just manually edit an xml file to include AH2 or any other game and off you go. Big choice you make is which version of SLI to use.
