Just wanted to relate a story about my Rottie.  She loved to go for rides in the car.  I had a Beretta at the time and put her in the front seat and buckled her up.  We stopped for gas and I left the window down about a foot.  There was a jerk next to us and he started making sounds at her.  She just sat there and watched him while keeping an eye on me as well, didn't move a muscle.  As I was walking in to pay he started making growling noises at her and jumping towards the car.  I guess he was just trying to get some sort of reaction from her, but she just stayed still.  As I was coming back out he got about 5 feet from the car and jumped and barked at her.  At that point she figured it was a real threat, jumped up and let loose with a snarl that I had never seen before.  This guy about jumped out of his skin and definitely needed to change his shorts.  I got back in the car with her and she leaned over and licked my face.  Just her way of saying "No worries, i've got your back." ;)  God I miss that dog......

Hey I totally agree with you. I too own a dog, an Alaskan Malamute. Wouldn't trade him for anything,  and I can see why you jumped me (so to speak).  Don't be sorry, I understand where you're comming from. You explain it better than me anyway, and I agree 100%. My typing speed sometimes runs in excess of my wording.

On my drive every morning there is big German Shepard dog that has a chain that is no more than 6 feet long. The house is situated no more than 2 yards away from the highway. The dog is chained up on the road side of the house, and it's chain does not allow it to enter it's "doggy den" that is right next to the road. I find the dog every morning laying outside of it's doghouse right next to the road. There is no land around it, just the house and a cliff on the other, so the dog is never let loose from it's chain, and from what I can tell is poorly taken care of. Could be a very nice dog, but presently looks very ragged.

I am a rotty owner too and I hate to hear how some folks talk about the dog and have no understanding of the breed itself.

I have had my pup since he was 5 weeks old and hes going on 6 years old now. He's a very people oriented type dog. I feel sorry for the person who tries to hurt me and he is around.

They get a bad rap from media stupidity and the parrots that parrot whats on tv is the ultimate truth so sayeth the tv. Rotties are a companion/ working class dog. Rotties are not bred to attack. Like it has been mentioned its not in their nature unless somebody interviens and makes it happen.

I have come to the conclusion that from here on out I will always probably own rotties.  They are a good dog with a few realistic exceptions to the rule unfortunately.

I used to breed rotties.

They are a difficult breed to manage. They have a tendency towards agression and are very shy.

Rotts will take out a man's throat if they feel confused or humiliated. On a side note, Rotties are not very strong for their size....an 80 lb Rott is not really very dangerous to a grown man, as the man can easily wrestle down the dog.

I have 2 beagles and a poop.

On a side note,  they are easy to wrestle too.

Although once when playing with the poop, she was running at me at leapt at me. I missed grabbing her and the crown of her head hit me square in the nuts. I fell to the ground and the poop proceeded to run several victory laps around the house, leaping over my prostrate form with each roundy.

My wife still thinks it's the funniest thing she's ever seen.

I've never had a better dog.

Actually yes, but I feel very ashamed because I have witnessed this same dog for about four years now and I havn't done a single thing. I'm thinkin I will though, it's almost torture the way it lives. Why would you even want to own a dog if your going your now going to pay it any attention?

Dogs are smart.  They know what a gun looks like, and they do react very compliciitly when shown the gun.   Could be they're smarter than people.

Anyhow, there's no reason to shoot a dog, unless it has rabies.  That is my greatest fear, but haven't run into that yet, though thought I had when the pit bull jumped a 6 ft. fence and attacked me while I was out on a neighborhood jog.

Wouldn't you know it, that's the only time I didn't carry a .44 Bulldog revolver with me when I jogged.  It was the dog's and my lucky day.:D

Yeah, if you can't get away with it scott free, there's no point in doing it.  And no way would I have gotten away with that scott free.  Would have had to run another mile to get home, and I think someone would have heard the shot at least.
