I hate to see anyone trying to justify the actions of the hemorhoid that caused the death of a Police Officer and the wounding of others. To say he was mentally ill is a nice crutch label. It is not an excuse nor is it justification. It's very convenient to claim that but the actions the scumbag took were not necessarliy indicative of someone off his nut. He fired a round in the parking lot then told the clerk a story guaranteed to get a Police response. Then he went outside to look for the Officers to arrive knowing they would be coming in response to the call and most likely looking to solve the situation nonviolently. He ambushed them plain and simple. This was a premeditated act and is not justified by any apologist excuse.

Crumpp, you are right on the mark, to you.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

What? Another senseless gun killing in America? Naaah, sorry - I don't believe it.

There's all kinds of literature about these things happening after WW2, in the US.  Our veteran's welfare system is full of people who could not cope with the stress of fear.

2 things here.

1. Go get a copy of of 'Stolen Valor'
( http://www.stolenvalor.com/ ) for a real eye opener on Vietnam Veterans and 'PTSD'.

2. Wombatt there is a big difference between the guys serving in combat arms today and the guys doing the same job in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam in terms of training/preparation/selection/etc. Take an 18 year old draftee and put him into combat against the Germans after 8 weeks of training and you are going to get some people who understandably become overwhelmed. The length and instensity of training for warfighters today is much greater. Don't expect a modern Marine to have the same reaction to combat against Iraqi insurgents that a WW2 Marine had after hitting the beach at Iwo against the Japanese.

Crumpp - keep up the good work and don't block any bullets with your face. :)

Wombat wouldn't know what end of a gun the bullet comes out of. I bet he has never even been within 5' of a real gun (sorry those plastic cap pistols don't count). So just ignore comments from him, he is obviously totally unqualifed to express an opinion on anything to do with the military.

So my marines are using chinese rifles now? Another well informed reporter.

Anyway, we should disband our military, it's much to dangerous, someone could get hurt. There are other ways to get into college than getting shot at.

He said this "So all your chest pounding tells me is that one you either never really served in combat or that you never served at all. "

To a guy who has served in Iraq and is going back voluntarily. I  value the guy who has been there and is going back's opinion more than a guy like Wombatt who seems to know nothing about weapons, combat, guns or anything else.

I guess Wombatt might know something about mental health problems though.

one of the things that puzzles me so often about these boards is how quick some are to devalue our fellow denizens right to an opinion and free speech to the point where, rather than just debating the matter, there is an instant  pull on the "you are a know nothing wacko" trigger.

frankly.  i think that is, in itself, delusional and wacko.

not to devalue your opinion on the other matter, as you are military, your expertise may be local, but the global arguement on the subject is not soley held by those in service.

Sorry but you have to have been here at least 24 months or 500 posts in order for your opinion to be taken seriously.:p
