And The Biggest Software Program Is ...

... not Aces High II, with its on-line site carrying the bulk of the load and requiring only 53.53 MB.

According to XP Add/Delete Program sizes, and of course speaking about only programs on my computer:

Tied for 5th and 6th largest are IL-2 FB and IL-2 AEP with 1,657 MB each (which could make IL-2 2nd at 3314 MB considering combined size -- not sure if both files really that large, but that's how XP lists them).

4th largest, including 11.18 Server Manager, is America's Army at 1953.18 MB.

3rd largest is Far Cry at 3,070 MB.

2nd largest is MS Flight Sim 2004 at 3,282 MB.

And the winner, largest of all by the whopping margin of nearly 14 GIGabytes, is ...

X-Plane 8.0 at 17,189 MB!

I would blame the high resolution terrain elevation data for the entire world which is provided with it.  As others here will no doubt be quick to point out, you are given the opportunity to purchase similar terrain elevation data for MSFS afterwards.

(UNQUOTE)

Can pay for it and download it on the X-Plane site, but if you can find it in a store (got mine at CompUSA), you might be better off with the DVD.

That real weather stuff is great.  I love looking out my window at overcast while flying a United heavy into LAX...  through the same overcast.

METAR is cool.  I can decipher a METAR string, and everything is in its place.  It's designed to be read by computers, but with a bone thrown out there for human comprehension.

What I CANNOT understand is why the forecast briefs are so screwed up.  Here's a typical example:

CLODS BRKN AT TWLV THSND FT WT RME IC FRMNG AT THRTNTHSNDFVHDRD FT O AD CN YU PCK UP MLK AT TH STRE N YR WY HME?

It's this messed up shorthand that I have to read out loud to understand, because it's phonetic.  Are the extra bytes needed to present the user with VOWELS that expensive?  It's obviously not a machine readable thing, at least, not by design.  Machines read 'em, but because they've been taught how to interpret instant phone messaging speak by the weather guys.

Add FSGlobal 2005 to FS9 it comes on 2 DVD's and add's something like 12gb of global real world terrain data  to your install folder. My FS9 folder is 9.8Gb and that's with it being compressed. Without It must be in the 20gb range.

So the terrain goes from this.

To this

One I'm really looking forward to is Ultimate Terrain, which amongst alot of other things, roads etc. Fixes up the night lighting. To this.
