mora, my first reaction was an urge to tell you that you're a dumb-ass.

~disclaimer: I didn't say he's a dumb-ass. Even if I had, it wouldn't have been a personal attack, just an attempt to alert someone to a potential problem they may wish to compensate for. Therefore, even if I'd given in to the urge I'd have been performing an act of benevolent service. No need to compliment me for that, however, I'm always glad to be a helpful community member :)

However, on reflection perhaps I don't understand you, and don't understand Finns. So, indulge me with some dialogue, please...

Do you folks in Finland find it acceptable for people who drink enough alcohol to become intoxicated to then misbehave in ways that are offensive and perhaps dangerous to others around them?

Or is it that in Finland people are such skillful drinkers that they never cause problems as a result of their intoxication?

We do have laws here that prohibit public intoxication. However, our police do not seek people out to test whether or not they are intoxicated. These laws are only enforced when someone is being a nuisance to others, is being offensive to others, or is engaging in behavior that may be dangerous to others.

In cases like this, the police officer who responds may choose to enforce the law regarding public intoxication if it seems appropriate. Doing so may simply be the most appropriate thing to do because in fact, its the person's intoxication that caused the problem which required the police officer's attention, and in this way the person is removed to a safe area (jail) so that the immediate problem is alleviated without other citizens having to become involved as witnesses, etc.

I hope I haven't wasted my time here explaining the obvious to a dumb-ass, and that this has been helpful.

Oh, ****, I need this again....

If they get drunk too often the ice bears will eventually kill and eat them and end the problem.

Because you can be a serious threat to others? I'm sure you folks have "drunk driving" laws.

You don't have to be in a vehicle to endanger/annoy others when you are drunk.

There is no law in existance against being drunk in the privacy of your own property. When you take your drunk arse out in public and behave in a disorderly manner you can get a PI charge against you just as another penalty to try to teach you a lesson. This subject apparantly has a learning disorder in addition to his drinking problem.

All arrest records are public, not all of them are published on the intardnet, but I expect that to changeover the next few years. In some communities you get your name and picture in the newspaper if you are arrested for DWI, this is merely an extension of that.

I think it's about the same here really. Arrest do happen here too if you misbehave, not for being drunk though. If you pass out on the street they will likely take you in for your own safety, especially during the winter. If alcohol is legal then why should it be illegal to be drunk?

And you do not see any problem with that? How about letting a court convict them first before posting their pictures on the newspaper?

You are making the PO the judge here, and hand him the power to toss out life sentences.

I agree with this completely. If you behave in a disorderly manner you should be arrested.

You can be a danger/annoyance to others even when you are totally sober.

I went to a bar last night, had three beers with friends and walked home as always. In the US it would have been a criminal offence apparently?

Anything may happen. For example, people shoot each other with weapons everyday, should it be legal to own and operate potentially dangerous equipment?(no, I'm not against gun ownership, merely questioning your logic)
