Uh yeah, Photoshop is really the only game in town. Why does it cost so much?

Well:
A) people will pay that much for it.
B) it's marketed at professionals or semi-professionals. MOst people don't need photoshop, and wouldn't pay for it. A smaller market means a higher price point to recover the investment.
C) It's the only game in town.

Of course, GIMP, the open-source alternative, seems to be gaining popularity and ground.

I work daily with Photoshop (Macintosh) mainly in CMYK format, if you work close with
print companys the color calibration alone is worth the money.
Imagine you spend hours creating an Illustration only to see the look
of the final product on paper looks complete different.
The statement below is true.
The statement above is false.

I use it everyday at work so also note if your buying Photoshop CS (creative studio) you are getting. illustrator, In design and Image ready as well.

And as GhOstFT said, it worth it just for the colour calibration.

And it supports Wacom tablets fully, with pressure sesitivity for brush size/opacity and tilt on brushes which really kicks arse :-)

i've been slowly switching over from the big brand name models to the open source versions.    in this case, i have been learning to use "the gimp"  blender is great for 3d modeling i am finding.

dont want to spend the money.  dont want to expose my system to wonky virus laden cracks anymore either.

they are nearly as good and can usually accomplish what i need to get done.

someday when im rich maybe ill buy a copy again.

P.S. Photoshop CS is about $699.99 American currency according to Comp USA.

It's not expensive you can purchase it for as little as $5 or maybe $20  and have it mailed to your door. I got every photoshop programe on 1 DVD for free :-)

Have a holiday in Asia, just about every market sells software by the dozen for $5 I had a link to a few sites where you could order online and they mail out to you. I'll try find it as the two I just tried have been shut down and moved to another address. Or have a look around in bittorrent download client.

I've had PS for years but hardly ever used it other then for very basic funtions. Never understood the reason to spend hours pi**ing about with PS and photos when that time is better used out in the field taking more photos and improving technique.
