They don't necessarily protect it like $700 worth of hardware at my school.

Because it's the standard by which all other photo editors are measured. The price is steep, no doubt. They can charge this much because the industry will bear it.

If you learn to use IRAF, you can do MUCH better than photoshop for free & do it much quicker

it's not a camera filter moose, but rather a "dodge and burn" or "painting with light" technique in CS using black and white layers.

the originals are somewhat lack luster.

the sky was replaced in the barn shot.
