For me this story has two implications:
First, it reinforces the idea that the mainstream American media still has a credibilty problem. It's as if nothing was learned from CBS's Bush National Guard service fiasco. Seems it is still profits and sensationalism over disciplined, accurate reporting.
Second, and more importantly, I see the riots and deaths that occurred as a result in Afghanistan as another denouncement of Islam. This violence occurred in a democratic Muslim nation. Afghanistan has held its elections and has U.S. troops on its soil. It is supposed to be turning the corner and joining the table of civilized nations, isn't it? And, my God, the reason for these riots and deaths turned out to be bogus on top of everything? Oh, the shame and stupidity!
I wonder if Islam's temper tantrum in Afghanistan will have political implications in dealing with Iran and its nuclear ambitions?
If I were Newsweek I would certainly print a full expose of the story, complete with details and named sources. But my cover story next week would be pictures of the riots and dead bodies in Afghanistan, with the story "What the Hell is wrong with Islam?"
