Megadud, maybe you can tell me some differences (besides the use of sticks and the surface) between football and hockey.
Both have a goalie guarding a goal at either end of the playing surface, both can end in ties, both have typical scores of 1 - 0 or maybe 3 - 2... In both the object is to pass the ball/puck into a position that could allow for a shot on goal while defending against that same thing by the opposing team...
I would think if one loved one of these sports, he could at least appreciate the other.
Well, in hockey they let them fight until somebody is off their feet. Once a guy hits the ground, damage can actually be done since they're not sliding around, and the referees jump in and pull them apart. Finally, they get punished by waiting 3 minutes in a small box while their team plays down 4 vs 5.
In soccer, fighting (I geuss due to the lack of pads) is rewarded with player ejection and sometimes multiple game suspensions.
Instead of direct & indirect kicks you get face offs. Penalty kicks ... I dunno wtf you'd call it in hockey but they're both 1 vs 1 against the goalie.
Other than that, they're not much different. Even some of the rules (offsides) are similar.
