I rember when i was in my bachelor time going home from a holiday in spain.

Somewhere on a parking along the highway some kid just walked to my car and wanted to go in .
The parents pulled away the kid but he imidiatly walked back to my car over and over . My friend and i laughed about it.

I saw a red '79 Convertible for sale yesterday and I had to force myself not to stop and check it out.

lol Bug !

My parents used to own a blue vw bus. Got alot of attention too. They had ripped out everything inside and made a camper of it. Wish they had kept it but they wanted somthing larger and got a summerhouse. :)

uhm the one i have never let me down.

i tell ya the cylinder heads where a bit leaking but i stiil made a trip via the alps to venetie to monaco to st tropez to spain Lioret de mar and back home about 5000km without any trouble.
I had to start it with aftershave via my carburator when the motor was cold.

:) (that summer the anwb a carhelp service saw 20% increase of breakdowns along the roads in southern europe just because of the heat )

I believe a texan has the world record at about 2,7 kilometers on it with 1 engine revision.

some thing indeed get broke and mostly stay that way like the heater system ok that suks. And dont forget the window cleaning system working on ur spare tyre.
but it was a 38'design with about 80.000 changes of evolution after that.

is sure was reliable

never seen one go 80,000 miles.. never seen a bus go 125 miles to tahoe and back without a blown engine.

In the sixties and seventies around here there were bugs littlering the sides of the freeways every 20 miles or so... they either rolled over trying to change lanes in the wind or had burned up engines.

most kids put at least 2 engines in theirs before they got rid of em and never looked back

Those old beetles were dang near indestructable. We used to make stumpjumpers outa them when I was a kid and race them thru the pasture. Could swap out an engine in under 5 min.:)

picked it up for my 16 year old son three years ago.
Let him drive my 94 honda after a while, I felt it was safer. Glad I did as he totaled it when he pulled out in front of a van. In the bug, he'd been seriously injured if not killed.
I drive it daily to work and back as it is under 3 miles each way. Summertime is warm but the short commute is not bad.

Yup, thats my impression too :)

Maybe they are bad in really hot weather tho, no idea. In our climate they are good except in winter unless you bring your own heater with its own nucular powerstation.

Hot weather?? thats why they made the dune buggys racing through the desert.

or maybe people thought it was so reliable it doesnt need maintenance.

Just like cessna claimed to death.

Unfortunately a friend changed the oil when I loaned it to him for the week end, he forgot to put the oil plug washer on the nut, the engine burned up. I sold it for something like $100.
