I believe there has been a rule change regarding O-line blocking and the definition of holding since I played in the 70's. If I get the urge I'll look it up. I played end, but we were never taught to use our hands to block.. even in high school.

Rip

Keep me posted on what you guys are doing. Plus we may be having a thanksgiving football tournament down here. We are looking into it now and getting sponsorships lined up and looking to invite a few teams from all over the nation if possible. But at any rate the tourney is very early infancy and may not get off the ground.

Reschke, where'd you play? If you don't mind me asking. A bunch of my high school team mates (I graduated in '71) ended up playing for Bama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Troy State, Kansas State, and Arkansas.

I a bench warmer, myself.

I was on the Juco team at Marion Military Institute for two years fall '89 and fall '90 (only played one due to injury). Then went to UAB and played three more seasons but was there from 91-94. I had ACL reconstruction after the '91 season then destroyed my ankle two weeks into pre-season in '93 and sat out that season before finishing up in '94.

Juco ball was tougher than UAB by a longshot. UAB was a cakewalk for those of us who came from Juco programs into that beginners atmosphere back when we first started out the program there.

First day of practice is in the books and its looking good so far. Except for the DA coach who tore his knee up jogging over from the other field for introductions.......ME! I go see the orthopaedic surgeon in the morning and if it needs surgery its going on the waiting list just like a bunch of other stuff.

Hell I took two steps into the light jog and POW...BAMM...ZOKKK!

I nearly let those parents hear a few choice words come popping out of my mouth but instead I let the ball cap and clipboard fly about 50 feet!

I still don't know what the heck happened but it felt funny because all kinds of stuff inside the knee just sort of felt loose all of a sudden.

Yeah Oct I had a monster of an injury back in 1991 when my ACL decided to pull a little over 1/4" of my femur off with it when it wanted to snap. Funny thing is the damn ligament never broke just the bone and as a result of that it destroyed the inside of my knee. I'll let you know what happened after tomorrows evaluation.

Sounds like we need to get those boys down here to Alabama to see if they really know football or the coaches just cherry picked the area and smoked everyone else.

We missed signing up for the Sumner football team in March, ended up waiting in line for 1.5 hours to sign up for the next closest town that had a junior football program. From this program has come a few NFL quarterbacks that I'm sure you;d remember...(Brock Huard, Damon Huard, Jim Zorn, Billy Joe Hobert) anyway, 150 kids showed up for 40 roster spots...goood thing we showed up 1.5 hours in advance last April!

Sounds like what I hear they do in Texas.

It has been explained to me that because Dallas is so large an area they have a bunch of teams.
And what they do is cherry pick the biggest and best kids and put them on certain teams. Basiucally creating all star teams leaving the other kids to either play on the lesser teams or not play at all.

No offence to Texans and if it isnt true then it isnt.
But all I know is, some years ago when my sons undefeated team which  made it to Pop Warner Super Bowl Week in Disney world they ended up playing and loosing to the eventual champs from one of the Dallas teams.

Now on our team we had kids of all sizes ranging from those struggling to keep their weight down to those struggling to make the minimum weight.
and thats pretty much what we saw with every single other team they faced right on through the regionals.

But on the Dallas team. Not a single kid was more then two or three pounds under the max weight limit and almost half were just a pound or less under.

Our guys made a good showing of it but there was just no way they could compete with the size difference. LOL I remember one play specifically where this huge Dallas running back literally dragged 3 of our guys, Including two of our best defencive players 5 yards down the feild before they could get him down.

After the game and over the coarse of the rest of the week we were talking about it with some folks who explained what I said above to us. From several different people in at different times.

Now if thats the way it is then thats the way it is.
Just doesnt seem very fair and I know your not allowed to do that sort of thing here. Where they only way you dont play for the town or area you live in is if that team is full. Then and only then can you go to and play for another town or area. And your not allowed to pick and choose who is on the team. Its all first come first serve by rule.

Just seems sad that anyone would be that desperate to win they would have to stoop to such levels.

All in all everyone had a good time and we were all just happy to make it there considering it was only our towns second year witha Pop Warner team.
Was a hell of a year which included one of the very best games I've ever seen played at ANY level bar none against a very good East Orange team where at one point the guys gave the ball up on our own 4 yard line and held them and we eventually won 6-0 on the last play of the game with 2 seconds left.

The cheering and chanting of "DE-FENCE" from the crowd got so loud on both sides that the cheerleaders stopped cheering. LOL
Hell of a game.
