OK,

I have
AMD 4200 x2/ Asus an8 sli deluxe MB
1 GiG of pc433 RAM
6800gt vid card, pci express
XP 64 Pro
All of my drivers are the latest I can find from Nvidia and Asus
Dxdiag shows everything is fine from what I see.
What happens is AH often locks up on launch not even getting anything open. When it does launch I can occasionally fly but I'll freeze up or all of the graphics will go black except for some dials.

One other thing, on the ctrl-alt-del -> system resources I'm barely using 300megs out of the gig or ram but I'm showing page file usage. Am I not correct in thinking that the bar will show mem usage instead of pagefile usage unless its using quite a bit more pagefile than it should?

When the system is running I'm barely taxing the machine, I can even put AH on the second processor so it's all by itself but have the same results. Any ideas? Something is screwy but what?

Try the Omega 66.93 driver and see if your problems go away. Lots of folks having problems with the new driver from Nvidia.

Just did and it locked up. looks like its trying to send stuff to the pagefile which then effectively locks it up since the HD can't keep up with the video card.

It just locked now with the following:

vidmem 259 used 23.5 cnt 3
sysmem 123.5 used 486 Tex 82.7

Doesn't this mean it's trying to PageFile some of it? Why? There is plenty of system resources available. WTH?

Depending on how much space you have left on the hard drive, you might want to try entering a manual setting for the page file size. You can always reset it. The settings in the registry might have gotten screwy. Setting it manually would force a change. Before doing that though, I'd run a basic defrag and disc scan.

disk checks are fine, I turned off Page files entirely but strangely the task manager still shows PF Usage, right now its at 251 megs despite paging being turned off. The machine still dies when I start AH but seems normal otherwise. Often the screen turns a few shades darker and the clipboard does a fancy spin of death until the machine locks up entirely.

Try this:

1) Turn off any anti-aliasing you have forced in the video card.
2) Set texture size in Aces High to 512 or 256
3) Run the game at either 1280x1024 or 1024x768 resolution.
4) Make sure you have that AC97 sound thing set to 3/4 hardware acceleration.
5) Uncheck the skins preload, if it is checked, in the video setup.
6) Disable skins in the game.

Now, if the problems go away, then you have found the answer. Resource starvation. If they problem persists, I would start looking at heat or power issues. From there, RAM next.

That sounds exactly like what happens if I try to turn on Anti-Aliasing on my video card. I have to leave it on app. preference (which is off for AH), or turn it off entirely.

this might be a dumb question, but are you using the Nvidia drivers specifically for XP64? There is a seperate file if you are running that OS. Im not sure there is a difference, but doesnt hurt to try it.

I booted up win 2003 server which I had used before without trouble for months with a dif MB/CPU/9800 vid card. I have the exact same problem. Most of the tiem it freezes up almost immediately but will freeze up for sure within a min or 2. I can't imagine its a heat issue if its freezing in 1-2 seconds of clicking the icon. I also tried Halo at max details and that runs perfectly for long periods of time. I'm guessing its a drivers issue with the 6800 gt card but I'm at a loss since it seems to work fine in every other situation. It does the same thing even if I turn it down to preload nothing, 128 bit textures, 640x480 vid res. Its the exact same thing. Any ideas at all?

I'm also getting the spinning clipboard of death too when it does make it into the game. I did find part of my problem since one of my ram sticks was bad according to memtest86. It's being RMA'd now but I'm still having these other problems. Any ideas? It does the same thing in 2 different OS's but the nvidia drivers are the same.
