AMD64 X2 Lockup problem
« Reply #30 on: September 10, 2005, 09:11:51 AM »
Finally found a solution, even annoying one, to this AMD64 X2 lockup problem I was having.

You have to run WinXP64 in sinle processor mode.

To do so you have to add /onecpu parameter in boot.ini:
run notepad c:\boot.ini

copy & paste the last line and add /onecpu  parameter to the new line.

For example here is my boot.ini after modification.
Quote

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional x64 Edition ONECPU" /onecpu /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Now I have to restart windows in onecpu mode to play AH, but at least I can play it now...

Shutting down one CPU has worked for me.  I seem to now have no issues running AH2.  Skuzzy, there is something weird with how you guys handle this with the coad.

Do I get my 2 months of lost play time credited?

I had this problem on my system initially as well.  Removing the "/usepmtimer" entry from the boot.ini fixed it for me.

Athlon64 4400 X2
WindowsXP Pro SP2
GeForce 6800GT 78.01 drivers

I am running with both processors just fine online now.  Offline it seems like AH runs too fast.

Same problem here.  Didn't have the /usepmtimer entry.  Shutting off one core fixed the AH issue, but it feels like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Update: there is a windows hotfix available that fixed the problem for me, without resorting to booting up in single cpu mode.

Just FYI, we have no control over the number of CPU's being used by the operating system, nor do we have control over drivers which are not thread safe.

Running in w98/ME compatibility mode seems to clear up the problem too.

Came across this while researching a game I was looking at buying.

Seems to be an almost exclusively Win XP/XP64 problem. (so whatever they changed in the 'task/thread manager' from 2000 to XP is the problem)

Two more workarounds -
1) Use XP's ability to 'emulate' an earlier OS. Set the game to run as a Win98 game (still maintains dual cores operating).

2) Start the game, ALT - TAB out
press CTRL+ALT+DEL to get the task manager
select the 'Processes' tab
find the game process and right click it
select "Set Affinity"
uncheck one of the cores (this forces the game to run single core only),seems best is to uncheck the 1st one, i.e. CPU 0.

I think it is crap that HiTech hasnt fixed this problem. I dont have this with Bf2, ET, Q4 or any other game I play. I had decided to fly AH again as I have a little more time for gaming and encounters this problem.

I get the splash, spinning clipboard, then everything darkens a bit and it locks up. After uninstalling the game, rebooting and reinstalling, I left out all the extra skins. I now get into the game, and to the hangar. The clipboard doesnt spin, but the aircraft page never makes it to the top. Instead it is off to the left, and when I select a runway I am in the plane and spinning all around until i crash and go back to the tower.

HiTech can blame AMD, Nvidia, or Microsoft, but it just shows how they are not keeping up with NEW HARDWARE or updates to the most popular operating system. Why should someone buy a dual core processor only to have to turn one of them off? That doesnt make sense.

I know I will get flamed for this post, but I am not picking on HiTech, I am simply pointing out the facts. They arent keeping up with hardware, all the other games are, so where is the problem?
