I agree with you Zenms.  AH is the only game I am having problems with.   If the problem is in Nvidia drivers not being thread safe I wonder why other games do work (and they do use both CPU cores).

Seems to be an almost exclusively Win XP/XP64 problem. (so whatever they changed in the 'task/thread manager' from 2000 to XP is the problem)

Two more workarounds -
1) Use XP's ability to 'emulate' an earlier OS. Set the game to run as a Win98 game (still maintains dual cores operating).

2) Start the game, ALT - TAB out
press CTRL+ALT+DEL to get the task manager
select the 'Processes' tab
find the game process and right click it
select "Set Affinity"
uncheck one of the cores (this forces the game to run single core only),seems best is to uncheck the 1st one, i.e. CPU 0.

How do you set up XP to emulate win98 to play Aces high?

Hyflyer81...your'e correct!  I found the same solution yesterday. Guess I was a day behind you.

Anyway, make sure you are completely in the game...that is, in the tower before you switch cores. Otherwise it's still screwed.

And yes, uncheck proc 0. Seems best that way.

More possible XP fixes -

1) Create a shortcut to Aces High.
Right click it and select properites
Set to run as Win98/Me

2)http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781&page=1&pp=20

3) Latest beta nVidia drivers 82.65 upward are supposed to have fixed driver issues, get them at http://www.guru3d.com

4) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909944

Definately been tied down to a change in the Windows XP/SP2 timer/thread manager that is causing problems when applications are being migrated across cores by Windows.

Do these problems extend to the X2 processors as well?

This particular problem is exclusive to the X2s.  The problems only get worse from here. :D

I was able to fly and die without much fuss - just switching one of the cores off and that did the trick.

Ran a test - when you reset the bios - it does something within windows that sets the power management back to minimal power management.

The result is - ****ty gameplay.

See the netstat.

Now with the power mgmt set to anything other then minimal power management....

Back to slick and smooth.

I have tried most of the drivers from NVidia and the only ones I have found that are reliable are 82.xx (12 I think).

Also I had a big problem with an add-on sound card when I had not disabled the onboard sound in Device Manager (or in the BIOS) that would cause AH2 to completely lock up before getting to the title screen.

Video Driver URL
« Reply #57 on: May 31, 2007, 08:31:15 PM »
Guys,

I have a buddy that has video problems. I told him that the AH gurus on the Forums know where to check/get the latest drivers. I know there's a site many of you use and I've see it referenced in other postings. The issue is I can't seem to find it to send to my buddy.

What is the name of the site that provides drivers for a wide range of video cards? I'm not sure what video card he's using, but any site that provides video driver updates would be helpful.

I'll send him the URL.

Thanks Guys

Need help
« Reply #59 on: August 03, 2007, 07:59:09 AM »
Hey Guys,
I have read this thread, and I am having kinda same probs.
I just got this new system.

AMD64 X2 4800+
A8N32 SLI mobo
2 7900 GT
2 gigs Ram

When I start AH the back of the clipboard spins around, and is somewhat shaded.
I am using the 162.18 forceware driver.
Not sure where & what to remove, as far as the (boot) inf, or cool & quiet files etc.
Can someone kinda walk me thru, some things to try?
Thanks in Advance
