As long as we're in a popularity contest in foriegn affairs we're gonna lose troops.

The mission is lost. The message is lost.

Now it's attrition, public discontent and the economics of the battlefield that will steadily erode what small coinage we gained by tossing out saddam.

Choices? Few. Ride it out, get the Iraqi government up, keep it up. Ala Diem, Vietnam; corruption in the government, hate in the streets. Or pull out when the Iraqi's complete their government's constitution. Protect the nation from foriegn armies, but allow it's civil war to play out without intervention.

Or we can just pull out and do as Shifty suggests. Kill one of ours, a thousand of theirs meet Allah. Good as far as it goes.. however, there are nukes in Islamic hands. They may like the odds. I know I would in their shoes.

meanwhile.. whats happening here at home? The war has already cost us many many billions. Will likely cost us more. Let alone the costs in lost rights and freedoms. It's bankrupting the economy and will likely continue to do so.

Anybody see a way outta this burning forrest?
The price of Freedom is the willingness to do sudden battle, anywhere, any time and with utter recklessness...

well... the troops over there don't seem so upset as some of the people here on the boards..  in the meantime they are taking very light casualties.... not much worse than they would in years of war games and training and just plain living...

They are ridding the world of some real nasty folk too...  I really doubt that there is an endless supply of terrorists (freedom fighters) from other countries willing to die 20 to 1 to kill Americans..... a lot of countries are missing their terrorists who ain't coming home... not standing upright anyhow.

Well said Lazs.

One thing I would like to point out, and again it's an opinon. Our enemy isn't as sqeemish about killing as we are. Anybody that can slowly behead a person with a large knife doesn't give a crap one way or the other about what others feel or think. They probably could give two chits about if you are for or against our involvement in the war. If your American, and if they get their hands on you....... Your dead period. Thats the only advantage I can see they have. They don't have to worry about political correctness.
There is no way for them to beat us. We may beat ourselve's , but they wont beat us. To me this is the only example where the War on Terror and Vietnam were similar. North Vietnam didn't beat the America. Americans beat America.

Hangtime I don't belive we even have to use nukes to teach em a lesson when terrorist strike us. I think we could do it with conventional weapons. I know theres a a lot of fear that Islamic fudemetalist may have their hands on a nuke. I'll bore you with one more opinon............ I think if they had one they would have used it already.  Should they ever use one , I think our response would probably settle the Mid East problem for good.
Pull the trigger until the gun goes click, or silo in this case.

Okay I'm putting my soap box away for the rest of the day.:p

The only thing we realy need to do is to just give Isreal our consent for them to do what ever they feel needs to be done.

Sure... and stop bankrolling them as well.

Let's see how well they get along with their neighbors without their hands in our pockets.

Israel will never loose.  As long as we stay on their side we will survive as well.

I'm pretty sure the U.S. would do just fine without the help of Israel.

I am kind of curious on what knowledge source you base those statements?

Just curious, but are you over there, been over there, or have anyone close to you over there telling you what is going on, feeding you a complete picture?  I dont know your background, maybe you are a military guy, I dont know.

I am only asking because I have nothing much more to go on than the slanted, incomplete picture that CNN and that ilk is providing, and I dont trust them.  Read a book written by any quality war coorespondant and you will quickly realize how crappy most war coverage is, and how little the "reporters" actually bother to learn.

Then, toss in the liberal bias that too often slants a story or paints a very incomplete one, both at the reporter level, then in the network offices, and you will understand why I feel I cant judge really how the war is going from my vantage point in the USA.
