« on: February 03, 2006, 07:32:28 PM »
i just received a huge computer today.....when i say huge it took two of us to bring it in....it is a dell poweredge 4400!   this is strictly high end pro equipment for being a business server

specs are
dual 800mhz pIII
4 gigs ram.  8x256megs
3 18gig scsi harddrives  it has 9 slots total for harddrives
scsi cd rom with 2 other open slots
onboard video...but it is only a a 16meg ati video
2 64 bit 66mhz pci slots
4 64 bit 33mhz pci slots
1 32 bit 33mhz pci slot(your normal slot)
all the 64 bit slots are hot plug too

overall it is an amazing computer but i can't seem to find out how much it is really worth......even where i work and the people we end up selling these to have no real idea....

i bought it for the scrap value...(i can't tell) so i can set up a game server but am really wondering how it would actaully play a game

if u have any idea on worth let me know;)

It's not much for gaming, but it would make a fine server for home use.  With the right capture card, it would be great for PVR use except that putting such a huge computer next to your TV could lead to divorce or eviction.

It's not cutting edge hardware and probably wouldn't even run windows very well but if the hardware is supported it would make a great linux box.

It might even work as a game server but that vid card might keep you from running some game servers.  Might have to get a pci vid card just to get the game server to run.

FWIW, I recently sold a computer with about the same speed (but not server-quality hardware) for $100.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

I dont think the old vid card would matter if it is being used as a server. All you need on the server end, vid wise is to make sure everything is working. It is not like you watch everyone play on the server, you use the video to check files, folders, stats, etc.... so the video card shouldnt matter. I would worry more about network stuff, because that would be the major hangup. Linux would be great, like as already stated, if you can find support for the hardware in it.
