As for not having things here translated from russian to english and available....  Huh?   there is no demand...  not censored... not unavailable...  just no demand.

I bet I can get any info translated that I want.   If any of it was remotely interesting or worthwhile.... someone would be doing it.

I was free to listen anything I wanted, more to say: Soviet laws didn't prohibit any spreading of recorded audio-materials. It's funny but true. And I did listen to Western propaganda radio back in the 80s, as almost everyone did, and noone ever cared. Short-wave radios were sold openly, even in any village hardware store.

I could get in trouble for posessing some literature, but noone cared, we had some "anti-soviet" books in my family. You could access almost anything you wanted. OTOH copying and spreading illegal literature was a crime, but the same thing happened in the US less then 50 years ago, so, please - stop teaching us ;)

I repeat: Western govt thought control is effective in reducing the demand for alternative information. And you again prove it. And please, look, what happens when the demand exists, and information is unwanted by govt: what could happen to you in 1955 if you boasted that you posess Communist literature?

All this screaming about "free press", "freedom of speech" etc is for idiots like our home-brewn "liberals".

Why would trust anyone? Do you seriously think that media controlled by business groups will bring you divine truth?

Ok... so you admit that you could "get in trouble" for possesing information that we can get freely here but that your ineffective government enforced the rules unevenly...

You had freedom so long as you seized it and..... didn't get caught...

you admit that we can get anything we want here but that because we have no interest....  we are not free?

You also talk of the 80's... the period when the soviets were the weakest... what of the 70's?  the 60's?   the 50's?

you admit that any info you have has been censored by your government allready so... IMO... it is worthless... your experiance counts of course but.... you were a criminal so... not typical.   Unless you are saying that all soviets broke the law and that by breaking the law.... your system worked?

very confusing..

And... if we knew knothing of your country.... it isn't because our government hid it from us.... it is because your country was ashamed of itself and built walls around it's country to keep people out.

There were no laws which prohibited to listen BBC or radio Freedom. Actually, if you think a little you will see paradox: if Soviet goverment prohibited to listen broadcasting of Western stations why the USSR produced almost all sets with short wave band? It was very easy just made FM and AM radio like on the West.

Last time I read Pravda was probably in 1990. I doubt they wrote about censorship in American internet.

Bull S!!t, the constitution was thrown out in the 1830's and has been going downhill ever since.

Has anyone here ever read the first amendment? Does anyone understand what it says?

All non Americans can be forgiven their ignorance ... but the first amendment guarentees nothing, it simply prohibits CONGRESS from PASSING LAWS abridging certain freedoms.
This does not prohibit courts or state governments from  using their powers to limit any of these, just the federal congress.

I am fully aware that the liberal advocates have eroded  the meaning of the constitution, for over 170 years, to the point that most Americans have no clue as to what it really says any more ... but as long as the common interpretation fits their personal agenda, the majority of the American people just do not give a flying fig.  They spout the common line and lie asleep peaceful in their ignorance ...

in 1925 the Supreme Court ruled in Gitlow v. New York that the due process clause of the 14th Amendment incorporated the First Amendment, extending free speech protections to the states.

I allways thought the 14th protected the first and that the second protected all the others.

As for short wave radios... we all could have short wave radios too... is short wave radio the only measure of freedom used in old soviet russia?   what country did not have short wave radio or... made it illegal?

Seems to me that the very basis of this entire thread...and the ridiculous insinuations in that first post...is so wildly shallow, uninformed and without recognizable merit as to make me wonder why it's even worth 52 posts in response.

I agree with Skuzzy...At least, if you're going to get on this board and call all of us idiots (in so many words), you could have the decency to get a clue.  Really...you're showing your ignorance of the subject.

BTW The Soviet Union no long exsists. My Grandmother out lived it. and got to contact her childhood friends after many years.  You all sould view the Russian people like those of WWII. The govenment may be lacking (like ours isnt) but the people are still the good folks we once called allies.

My all time WWII hero was Nadya Popova. A true flying wonder. Do a seach on her and her unit. Try and compare what they did, to any US female pilots.
