Texas arresting people in bars for being drunk

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

This seems a bit over the limit and personal invasion of privacy. So what is the limit for public intoxication. Is there a point system? .08 for driving I understand but I can sit and speak normal carry a conversation and have a good time at a .16 call a cab go home. How is it legal to arrest someone for that.

If the person is out of control then arrest him for public intoxication but not because he has had a few beers. This is quite possibly the lamest thing I have ever seen.

well thats a nice safe job for the police, they should be able to handle drunks.  we would not want them to get hurt chasing real criminals.

If they are over the legal limit for drinking and driving, they have every right to.
I have met some nasty cops. I also have more friends who are cops than not.  But all are not "pigs" as you so wonderfly, generally classified them as.

You don't think drunk *******s driving around at 2 PM is a problem?

I hope the next cop you deal with gives you as much respect as you give them.

If they get around to arresting people for being stupid, maybe dubya would spend more time in DC.

Texas should just declare their independence. That way Dim Son would no longer be a US citizen and the average IQ of the nation would jump 10 points.

They can arrest a drunk in a bar, but can't manage to come up with any charges against the drunk who shoots his lawyer friend in the face.

But that badge sure does look good with them there boots and hats and belt buckle.

I think it's perfectly okay for cops to patrol around bars and wait for drunk drivers to leave the parking lot.

IANAL, but I'm pretty sure that the bar itself isn't public. It is a privately owned establishment.

This one will be challenged in court.

Ok, there is a reason the last thread got whacked.

Sooo, if you are all so intent on discussing this, fine.  Let's do this then.  Anyone making abusive/derogatory remarks can expect to have thier BB privileges revoked.

The bashing of the community is going to stop.

I have tried to be polite about this in other threads.  But that is not working.

I wouldnt doubt it. I was stationed in Abilene for 4 years. At the inprocessing meeting with the town cops, he explained to us they had ways of figuring out who the drunk drivers were. The guy that speeds 5 mph over the limit is a careless drunk. The guy who goes 5 mph under the limit is a careful drunk, and the guy going the speed limit is a sneaky drunk.

Thing is..he was serious. Texas...I think you have to be born there to fully appreciate it.

Contrary to popular belief, the term 'Public Intoxication' does not mean being drunk, or having had anything to drink.

What it means is that the person is so drunk, that they cannot control themselves.  I.E. Puking, Profanity, starting fights...  The only place this is legal is inside of your home.

Of course a poorly written article with bad journalistic standards could add to the confusion about what is going on.

This whole thing wouldn't be a problem if they used quotes and actually quoted what the person said.

I.E.
