i should re-post that down at the veterans center down the street - i am sure the old timers would appreciate the sentiment that some reactionary in kansas is happy the "chi-coms" can shoot missiles at them and their grandkids.

"Sparks underwent surgery to become a woman last year in Thailand because she couldn't afford it in the United States."

I won't touch the political aspects of this.

I just gotta say that if your DNA says you're male, you're male, no matter if you snip your dick away and take hormones.

If you dye your hair from brown to blonde, you're still a brown haired dude by nature. You just artifically coloured your hair.

This is a non life threatening thing. It is essentially cosmetic surgery. That, to me, should make it clear that the bill shouldn't be passed to someone else.

Sandman, from a purely medical point of view, there are very few medical arguments suggesting it is a necessary medical preocedure. If you venture into the world of psychiatry (which admittedly is part of medicin) one might get some support, but even then the MEDICAL response would not be to chop off someone's genitals but instead use medication to control depression or whatnot that someone confused about their gender can get into.

I have yet to see one case where a gender change has been a physical medical necessity. In fact, the adverse effects (both mentally and physically) of such a procedure are well documented.

I say let people do to their bodies what they want, but then they have to pick up the price tag themselves. I don't have any quarrels with people who do the gender shift thing and think it should be up to them. Letting someone else pick up the bill for it is just wrong in my book though.

Otherwise you'll end up having to pay for any eventual tattoo I get. Or Oprah's fat removal (liprosuction?) thingy.

Of course cabby makes it a leftist thingy, but he always does.   .

If it is true:
to go from male to female costs $40,000.00 but from female to male costs $70,000.00 and the city of San Fran only pays $50,000.00

This makes San Fran a bunch of sexist pigs!!!
Where's the equal rights????

The people of San Fran should be in the streets demonstrating on a daily basis till equal rights for all is achieved!!

I also know that due to an illness while a teanager, my wife is not able to conceive simply due to tube scarring. Artificial incimination is not covered by insurance and is only 40% successful... at $15k a try.

I had heard about the sex changes having funds supplied but didn't find out until last night that fertillity issues would also be covered.

It amazes me that this city went out of its way to accomodate one group of people on a subject they had virtually ignored everyone else on for so long.

Sigh.

Sorry I don't think the public should have to pay for something as sick as having your dick cut off or a new one put on.

You want to be a peter puffer? Fine go for it but don't tell me I have to accept it or finance it.

If being a straight white married man who thinks this whole thing is total roadkill makes me a bigot then I'm happy to be one.

Pretty much the way I feel, but it involves a lot more disrespect for gays.

I work(ed) with all sorts of folks, their 'lifestyle' bothers me not...but, I compare someone wanting a sex change to that of someone wanting a tattoo either removed, or added...its a cosmetic choice that an individual makes, and should not be charged to the taxpayer...hey, if the Almighty one dealt you a bad hand, you play the hand dealt to you, you should not expect others to pay the burden for His choice (if you do indeed believe that non-scientific approach)

Heh Mighty, I hope yer as intolerant of straight couples. I can tell you this with absolute certainty; there are straight couples doing some incredibly "perverted" things.

Of course it's easier to just hate disrespect gays  .

Everyone is a potential pervo, and lots of us have realized a life long dream of reaching undiscussable levels of degradation  .

How many of us actually live in San Francisco?

I don't, so this doesn't affect me and frankly if I did I wouldn't care.  It doesn't hurt me, I ain't gonna do it so who cares?  I honestly doubt this will be used more than 2 or 3 times, even in San Francisco.

The issue isn't that the freaks want to get freaker, it's who is footing the bill. The problem is that if something this bizarre gains a foot hold anywhere, it's growth is almost certain - city to state to federal. If a she wants to be a he or vise versa, so be it but don't have the tax payers pay for it.

I've lived in S.F. for 5 years now (goin to school) and I'm not a huge liberal activist or anything and half the crap that the people walk around preachin 'round here I could really care less about.  But when you meet people and becomes friends with them their cares and worries become yours as well.  That's why sometimes it's so hard to sit back and listen to some of the crap that people dish out around here when it comes to homosexuals.  How much is a gay man really gonna affect your life? Most just want to be left alone to live there's.  I mean really, a disease? come on people, it's not the big of deal who they go to bed with.  Doesn't change anything, they're just people who like everyone else get up to go to work in the morning and like to go grab some drinks with their friends afterwards.  Concerning the messure passed I don't think other people should have to foot the bill for these procedures but the idea of having an issue with these people just because they exsist just defies comprehension for me.  Why anyone would want to willing label themselves a biggot boggles my mind as well.

I completely agree with Eagler and StSanta.  The surgery is optional, voluntary, and not a treatment for any illnesses, physical or mental (except perhaps according to the most extreme psychiatrists).  The patient must pick up the bill here, not the public.

This topic seemed clear and simple to me- I wonder why some people decided that the gay lifestyle had to be brought up and spat upon?  It doesn't seem relevant.

Feenyx,
There is a rare genetic flaw where a person has XXY instead of XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes.  The people with XXY are mostly physically male and mentally female, their brain is physically female.

In other words, they want to be female and their "self" is telling them that they are female.

Eagler,
The odds of this getting further than Berkeley and maybe Oakland has got to be minute.  The vast majority of the country won't stand for these people to live in their communities, much less foot the bill for their medical work.  As almost none of us live in SF, we won't be footing the bill.  Further, given how rare this procedure is, I doubt that even in SF there will be much of a bill.  I think this is much ado about nothing.
