Wow SkyRock,
That was some post.
Now, here's what
really happened.
BTW, testifying is what I do for a living,
for what its worth.
I think it was A17.
We were taking a beating at A26 (the Knight Zone base that we took)
from several neighboring Knight bases so I decided to fly
north to kill the Barracks and Ord to give us a little breathing
room at A26 so we could regroup.
I upped an LA-7 and proceeded to the target alone.
I killed the barracks and ord and started to egress outta there but
then I noticed something.
During my attack run I realized that none of the ack
was firing at me so I went back around to have a look see.
Sure enough, all the ack was down except for one 88mm
(that would be the soft gun battery) which I then destroyed.
Having no ack and no enemy fighters to worry about I decided
to loiter over the field hoping for some uppers. The fighter hangars
were already down and I guess with the ord disabled no
bombers bothered to launch. The VH was up and I was
surprised that no GV's upped. I just figured that the base
had been abandoned. I began to orbit the base at about 3K.
When I arrived and during my time there I encountered
NO resistance. I was telling all the LCA's that 17 had been
abandoned and would be an easy take. It met the criteria
of LCA Dicta #2 and I wanted the LCA to take the base
and advance our front to the north.
The LCA were busy elsewhere and couldn't mount a capture
attempt at A17. I was getting bored orbiting that deserted field
and was about to leave when I saw an F4U-1C Corsair at my
low 4 O'clock position on what looked like a landng approach.
So I engaged the enemy aircraft. I'm sure that, had the roles
been reversed, I would have been pounced on as well.
When I dived I was going way too fast and the pilot,
having read Dicta-Boelcke, turned into me. I made two more
passes on this Corsair and each time he employed the same
"turn into your opponent" manuever. I missed on the first
2 passes but on my third swing I hit the ball and the plane
was 'outta here' and dead.
I didn't think to ask the pilot on Channel 200 whether the plane
had any fuel or ammo left. I don't take inventory of the condition
of my adversaries aircraft before I attack. I'm too busy. My bad.
After the shootdown I scanned for enemy combatants
and noticed that alot of enemy aircraft were returning to A17
with a decided altitude and E advantage. I was way over my
head and tried to evade and escape to no avail and was
shot down, suffering a horrible fate as I plummeted to
the ground in my burning hulk of a plane, unable to
bail out. Hardly a suicide.
I'm not going to call you any names SkyRock. I'm just going
to say that I'm disappointed at the stream of comments that
issued forth from your keyboard on channel 200. We were
all commenting on it. It was quite unfortunate and I'm sure
just reflected your passion at the moment and was not indicative
of your character.
Next time we meet I hope you shoot me down.
Maybe then you'll feel a little better.
BTW, I saw you land something like 9 kills later in the night
so I guess you receovered and got some payback.
Congratulations!
