ya know.... I have heard that one before too.... At AA meetings.   It is probly the second most repeated thing right after "bad luck" was their only problem.

For some reason there is this strong English fixation with blaming the tools used to commit the crime, or the object of the crime -- for crime -- instead of the human criminal. I blame Dr. Who for this. The Daleks were pure evil, and they were mechanical items. Deadly, engorged salt shakers from hell. This has only been reinforced by Star Trek (TNG). Look at the Borg. Perfectly good people/aliens, assimilated by evil machines. The humans no longer have free will, as the machine/object drives them to evil.

Then, for the object perspective, there is the The Ring of Doom from Lord of the Rings. Clearly the Middle Earth version of an iPod or pair of Nike Jordans, that seem to drive modern day saintly Boromirs to madness in acts of violent envy.

Many more examples...
Trilogy of Terror (Karen Black episode)
Hell Raiser
Jumanji
Forbidden Planet
Etc.

Perhaps I should get this published in a peer reviewed journal somewhere. The only problem with my theory lies in the second example (Star Trek TNG). Microsoft, which as any casual reader of Slashdot knows, is clearly the modern equivalent of the Borg. Microsoft is software, not hardware. Perplexing.

Ya know mavrick, and this will sound amazing....

I have actually yet to see any of the Terminator movies. I don't know why, except maybe the first one hit about the time the whole action hero thing was being beat to death. Perhaps time to get a remastered DVD version.

Aww, yeah, they're must-sees.  T1 introduced the cool concept, T2 gave more story and is still the favorite (I still get misty-eyed when ahhhnold gives the :aok at the end), and T3 was just cool for explaining the backstory of how the Terminators came to be.

Yep..I would say that I did.   I would not say that the newer more socialist AA is as good but things can be learned.   It is not what many think tho... or wasn't... It didn't used to be a place where you went to have people feel sorry for you

It was a place to go where people understood you and helped you help yourself.

Now that the government has stuck it's smelly beak under the tent... AA has become all but worthless like every other government program..

Want to destroy a worthy charitable or private cause?   Let the government in.   All there programs fail no matter how much of our money they spend so.... in their infinite wisdom... they seek out private ones that work and try to glom onto them... which of course.... destroys a once effective program that really did help people.  

I once helped habitat for humanity... now the government is involved and it is just another slum building program for drug addicts and criminals.   You can't discriminate between worthy people and scum when the government gets involved.

That being said..... If you ever needed help with alcohol I would help you... It might not be in the form you feel that you want but it would be a sincere effort based on the original AA teachings.

Maybe you need a new government? You seem to have issues with most of it. It is in general healthy to be critical and suspicious of those in power but I didnt know it was that bad.

Thank you for offering to help, and I will remember that if I ever find myself in a postion were I drink more than average. :)

For how long and how much did you drink? Any long term damage that you can put your finger on?

All govenment is evil.  A certain amount is needed tho to protect human rights and to defend the nations citizens against attack.   I simply feel that ours has grown too strong and as such... is the problem and not the solution.   Our founders had a pretty good idea of what was needed... we have strayed very far from that.

Drinking... I am screwing with you to some extent.  I am in on position to say who is or is not an alcoholic... I couldn't know.   Amount is not the way you tell.   Allmost all alcoholics use amount as a guidline.... A person who is not an alcoholic doesn't even consider it.

It is probly dependance that is most telling... that and patterns...  blackouts... drinking to excess... hiding it from anyone... Saying things only people with problems say.... like some I have pointed out (admittedly.. I led you into it).

Some others are saying "I can quit anytime I want" or (sorry) I am an average drinker.

A person who has no problem rarely thinks about how much they drink except for maybe the calories part of it or...... If they ever find themselves drunk and hungover... and... a person without a problem rarely finds themselves drunk or hungover.... when they do.... they do some soulsearching.... often quitting entirely for a period of time.

A person who has a glass of wine with dinner most nights never thinks about it...  the person who drinks a couple of shots after work and often leads to 5 or six and "falling asleep" in the chair often rationalizes and makes excuses.    They do think about it.

anyhow... don't get me started...
