My issue..
« on: August 29, 2006, 07:33:26 AM »
Lighting hit the transformer next to the house last night and took out my power. Now my rig no longer functions correctly. When I power it on all fans com on and there is no abonormal beeps. The monitor will now come on and acts as if its in stand by with the little green light blinking. It will not come up and show anything. The monitor works fine on my old ( real old) machine. Both bays drive open and close fine but they dont seem to be able to fire up what ever I put in them. Also the mute button on my Plantronics stays on constantly. This is about all I know about whats going on with it. I have some other issues with the microwave and a TiVo post strike as well.

Any ideas or input will be very nice or some hypothosis on what to fix would be great.:aok

Normally there is an LED on the motherboard which stays lit as long as the power supply is connected and the master power switch is on.  What color is that LED?  Shoudl be green.  Some motherboards will change its color to indicate a problem, or not light it at all.

Lightning strikes are just nasty.  If you cannot get to the BIOS, then you might consider checking the voltage levels on the power supply rails to see if they are actually at the right levels.  Just take a volt meter and measure the power from the supply.  Various good readings:  3V, 5V, 12V, -5V, and -12V.  If ou get a reading way outside of those, then there is a good chance the power supply is toast.

Once you have determined the state of the power supply, I would replace the motherboard.  If that does not fix it, then the CPU.  If that does not fix it, then the RAM.

If you have access to an oscilliscope, you can test the various components to see if they are working, but you would need the schematics to the motherboard.

Power supply, motherboard, CPU.

sounds familiar!

I just replaced my pooter due to a lightning strike as well. It actually worked (sort of) for a couple of days after, then would only boot in safe mode, then wouldn't boot at all, then the monitor just gave up as well.

My daughter works at a computer supply store though :)

She sold me an entirely new system (all the parts anyway) and I built it myself. Only took $1000 and about 6 hours of my time.

Well worth it. Just a bare bones sytem with out all the prepackaged crapola. Getting steady 75FR with high res pack too!  hehe

The light is amber/yellow. Its says its the DIMM LED. Im pretty sure it used to be green but Im not 100% on that. Ill get a volt meter on it in the morning and go from there.

Just in case RTR, whats your daughters #? (just  for parts I swear:D )

Id try a power supply swap .

all our pc's got hit hard at work from a line short , it took out every ps in the 4 pc's we have and fubared the microwave .

all the monitors  survived ...except for one that died about 6 months later .
the pc's are still running and that was 2 yrs ago .

Slash, youre *still* on the hunt? :D :lol

Seems like its the great PC dying times..... my rig is about 3 weeks old (thanks to a nicely timed power surge that had a few parts melting in awe and left the rest speechless.

Do you have an old Graphics Card lying around that fits your MB? Id also try that. Or put it into your old PC, see if it still works.

Always:D

I have nothing in the way of old parts. And the computer Im on now is such a relic Id hate to mess with anything on it. Its a 766mhz e-machine that has never worked right. Im just thankful I can get on the net with it.

Im going to try the power supply first and if thats not the problem Im scrapping her out. Im over due for a new rig and have been whining to the squad for a while about needing a new one. Moneys tight ( as usual) so you may not see my ugly mug in the MA for a few months. Lucky you:D
