This choice challenge would be interesting if based upon a scenario.  (society collapse, or stranded in the deep woods etc.)

The M6 is a versatile combination of choice, while shotgun and bullet on tap.

didn't they make a m6 that had a 223 over a 20 guage once?

m6 is ok so long as one shot will do it and you don't have to draw and fire of look inconspicuous with the damn thing.

No gun is good all around but.. the one gun that works best is the one you shoot well.

If it's just general, non SHTF scenarios, an M-1 carbine has a lot of appeal. Fun to shoot (more so, to me than the M-16/Ar-15 series), fairly cheap, good for general self defense at 100 yards or less with hollowpoints (myths aside, ball also has good penetration in cases where that might be important), if I were a deer hunter it would likely be marginal, but probably acceptable if you don't take a shot you wouldn't take with a bow, historical, did I mention fun to shoot, light, fun to shoot, etc. It's just a blast to shoot. It could fill in the SHTF scenario as well, but...

For some sort of SHTF scenario, the No. 5 MK1 Jungle carbine. Best battle rifle bolt action (fast, light, slick) with 10 rnd magazine. Kick is entirely managable, light weight, micronometer sights out to 800 yards, accurate. Also a blast to shoot :) Can take most game in North America, even Grizzlies if you absolutely had to I suppose. Slighlty less potent than 30.06, yet the bullet has an aluminum filler in the nose section that causes a quick tumble upon penetration. Simpler than a semi-auto. Light weight and small size. Ammo would be an issue, though I'm sitting on 2000 rounds of .303 British right now. You could get a sportered Indian 2A for the same effect in 7.62 NATO for more common ammo, etc. Easily reloadable using lead bullets without feed issues.

Wouldn't a scoped pump shotgun be a good choice?  Buckshot for close ranges, discarding sabots for long ranges.

Where does the hard core desert island thing come in? If the world is the wat it is now, and we have to go on with our lives as normal, then I would go with a hi-cap pistol in .45 ACP.

If it was a "hard core desert island" survial question, then something fully automatic (selectable semi) in 7.62 or .303 with 30 round magazine, top and bottom rails to mount scopes, lasers, lights, bi-pods, etc.

Imagine this... The Chinese and a race of Aliens just teamed up together and decided to invade the US. You need to flee, and fast. You're going into the mountains, Red Dawn style. You've got time to grab one gun, and you don't know what you'll be using it for. You're assuming you'll be hunting, but you may have to kill some Chinese infantry, or pop some Martians.

Remington 11-87.  Slug/Shot barrel.  As many Remington 3" copper solid sabot rounds as I can carry and a few cases of 7-1/2 shot winchester super speed.
