One Gun the Rest of Your Life
« on: September 15, 2006, 10:59:52 PM »
In the mood for some of that hard core desert island stuff?  Okay, suppose everything in the world is just the same as it is now, except nobody has any guns.  Not a one.  Nowhere.

And then suppose everyone gets to choose ONE gun, and only one gun, that is the only gun they will ever get to have for the rest of their life.

Suppose too that the gun could be any cost, include free ammo and service, and have any accessories, including extra barrels and calibers for those that offer them.  Would the extra barrels and calibers influence your choice?

And the one gun could be one of those dual calibers too, like .410 and .22.  Would that make you choose it?

Naturally you might have all sorts of different gun needs, e.g., hunting, home defense, job, target, skeet, whatever.

Tough.  You get only ONE gun for the rest of your life.

One gun to somehow best satisfy all of your varying shooting needs.

What gun would you choose?

To start things off (and I may change my mind by the end of the thread after seeing all your choices), I think ... I might ... possibly do best ...

with ...

an ...

M-1 .30 caliber carbine.

After all, it was intended as the super sidearm for the U.S. military in WWII.

Pleasant to carry, easy and accurate to fire, reasonable punch.

Remember -- just ONE gun the rest of your life.  Which one for you?

12 gauge pump action shotgun.

Can use slugs for large game, shot for birds and small game, can use buckshot for home defense......win win win. :)

Winchester 94 chambered in .44 magnum/.44 Special.

Reliable, light weight, accurate and with enough knockdown power to drop anything up to a grizzly. Use .44 Special for smaller game. Good for self- defense as well.

My Remington 870 Express Magnum 12ga pump. I've had it for 15 years and it's NEVER failed me. Killed to many birds to count, 3 deer, don't know how many clay pigions, and stopped 1 truck thief, and 1 idiot that thought he was going to come in my house.

The last 2 I only needed to rack the slide and that took care of everything.

Simply the best gun I've ever owned and I have more than gotten my money out of it.:aok

Might have to go with Springfield M6 Scout.

12 gauge pump...for reasons already noted.  Hornet's choice of the Remington 870 is probably the way to go, but there are a couple-three other good choices as well.

Wolfala...how's that Mk-7 do ya for pigeon or duck hunting?  :D

no such thing.   wide is on the closest track but... he has to carry the thing around and... the guy who chose the 300 weathreby with the 20 power scope is gonna be a problem for him..

The guy with the 44 mag revolver is gonna have it made in town or backpacking or the campsite... the 22 lr guy is gonna be able to carry lots of ammo... etc etc etc.

In starting this thread I wasn't thinking about specific situations like scoped  rifles vs. carbines or shotguns, just the vexing general idea about the one gun that people would choose if they could have only one.

It has valid economic considerations in real life now since shooting can get  expensive and everyone has to deal with budgets.

So young or old, experienced or novice, c'mon, dig deep, and share what would be your ONE gun choice if you could have only one the rest of your life.

I'm already vacillating between carbine and shotgun, thinking a long gun in short barrel in medium caliber rifle or 12- or 20-gauge might be the best compromise between firepower and toting ease.

If I could have only one gun, so far I am not thinking it would be a handgun -- the shorter barrel long guns seem a bit more versatile than the longer barrel handguns, although it can be very close call.

I picked the Winchester 94 because it has a stronger action than my favorite light rifle, the Winchester/Rossi 92 SRS. This rifle is chambered in .357 Magnum/.38 Special. It has a 16" barrel and is exceptionally light and fast on target. Its super-slick action is blinding fast, but sometimes tempermental, requiring occasional adjustment of the cartridge gate. Weighing in at 5.5 lb, it's not much heavier than some large-bore handguns. I also like the halfcock safety over the hammer-block on the 94. I've lugged this rifle for many miles using a simple loop sling. My rifle is decorated with Indian tack work, making it unique.

I have some nice .357 mag loads that take advantage the 16" barrel to generate near 30-30 velocity (about 2,050 fps) shooting 125 grain JHPs. Should break 2,100 fpm in a 20" barrel.

While this rifle is available in .44 mag, the action isn't as durable as that of the Win 94. Likewise, the Win 94 action isn't as slick or fast as the Win 92. But, since we're limited to one firearm, I'll take the extra durability of the Win 94. You can order a Win 94 Trapper, w/16" barrel chambered in .44 Mag from almost any dealer.

Winchesters have many advantages over bolt guns, and give up little to semi-autos in practical field use. They're light, quick sighting, reliable and slim in profile, making them easier to pack and carry.

Widewing

Remington 11-87.  34" ribbed barrel, rifled slug barrel.  Black synthetic stock.  Sort of exactly like the one I have now.
