Immersive VR? Adrenaline in AH ...
« on: September 30, 2006, 09:38:53 AM »
After some practice, nubee goes to MA for first combat.
Sees a bogie way out about 5 miles. Turn to merge, but FOF?
Then the icon pops up.  It's an ENEMY

Holy cow!  My heart's pounding heavy, about 140.

But  I'm new at this; the excitement  will wear off ...

Yet weeks later the same thing happens.  See a bogie and the
adrenaline kicks in, hands start shaking a bit.

That's Virtual reality,  I guess.   Now I know that I am a bit brain
warped, but does anyone else get a rush like this?  How long
does it last?  (I see some posts saying "so long, no fun anymore")
Does headtracker or screen size have anything to do with it?
3D glasses?

I've only been flying for 8 months or so, and that still happens to me.  I don't mind the adrenaline rush, but the sweaty palms can be a pain...

If you're lucky, it won't wear off.   I've been playing for years, and can still get in those situations where I actually perspire, and I'm a bit worn after the engagement.  Things like TrackIR, and some of the better soundpacks, can only help enhance the experience.

Welcome to the AH crackpipe...and enjoy it!

Yup, ten years this month.  If you keep looking for combat, AND if you can keep finding it, you'll never lose the rush.

Been flying in AW and AH for some 11-12 years now and I still get the shakes after a good fight.

Strange, but the wife ack is the only thing that I hate about this game.

I go back nearly 20 years to the first version of Air Warrior.  The terrain was a flat plane with pyramid mountains and the airplanes were stick figures.  Still, the first dogfight I got into I thought I was going to have a heart attack.  I actually had to log off and rest because I was so startled by my physiological response despite the far less than real "virtual reality" of the time.  After a few more days of AW the extreme adrenaline response moderated and now, 19 years later, I get only a minor rise in heart rate during an intense battle.

However that response probably changed the way I play.  I almost always try to attack from a position of superiority to minimize my "oh no" factor and cut my heart rate peaks.

..and then comes Scenario's .. where you *are* over England, seeing the channel in the distance, knowing France is beyond, .. and the yellow-nosed 109's will soon be flying over *your* home .. in the Fall of 1940.

I am a member of 610 squadron, County of Chester out of Biggin Hill, at angles 25 over Dover, on patrol.. hearing the controller vector us into the bogeys .. oh ya .. it is very much more intense.

We have to stop them.

I have been flying AW and now AH weekly for 10 years +.  If you don't over do it, and know when to log off, it can be fun for a long time.

You don't have to have anything fancy to get imersed in the game, but it helps.  If you have a small monitor, just sit closer :)  If you like the game, the best investment is a good HOTAS stick, throttle and rudder.
